Money Division In A Joint Family

She was clueless about the family business. She didn't pursue her own career. She had no savings of her husband to fall back on. She used to be berated by her mother-in-law for having had a daughter. Now, she was targeted for having brought about this misfortune.

But because she had nothing to fall back on, Neeta could not even leave her in-laws home and live separately. She offered to work for the family, but that was refused. She didn't want to go back to her parents.

Keep self finances separate from family finances

Abhijit and Shalini felt desperately sorry for Neeta. Abhijit wished he could help her setup some business of her own, perhaps fashion designing as she had studied it before her marriage. Now, Shalini's words came to his mind. He realized that however much they were a happy joint family, things could turn sour and cause his wife much pain. Even if life was hunky dory, there would be occasions like this when they desired to spend a large sum of money on something close to their heart.

To cut a long story short, Abhijit had a long heart-to-heart with his father who finally agreed that both he and Shalini should draw a salary for the work they performed for the family business.

In their case, Abhijit's father was just insecure about the prospect of him leaving the family business or home if he was financially secure. Once he was reassured that Abhijit had no such intentions, he had no objection to the new arrangement.

Shalini too, felt much more peaceful and at home. And yes, their first salaries went to help Neeta move out and start a new business. They felt they owed it to her, as her misfortune had helped turn around their situation.

The moral of this story:
  • It's great to work for your family business but ensure you earn a salary of which you set aside a portion as savings.
  • Always keep your wife in the loop. She may not work for the family business, but still inform her of major events and projects.
