Seven-Year Itch - Fact Or Fiction?

Post-marriage, Anannya took a break from work to have and raise two children. By the time the kids were age 4 and 6, she felt the need to get back to work. She started a business, initially from home. "This move did wonders for our relationship because it boosted my confidence. I'd begun to feel clingy - and hated this me. Now that I feel like the person I want to be, I'm in a much better position to give our marriage what it needs" she shares.

It may be work, or just a new interest or hobby or friends. You need to indulge in any activity that increases your own self-worth, independent of your spouse's opinions.

Feeling itchy after seven years of dating?

Is the seven-year itch a reality in this day and age when couples date longer before getting married, or choose the live-in path? What if a couple sees their marriage as a continuation of a great relationship, not the start of something entirely new? Would they still fall prey to this itch?

Sania believes that if a couple knows each other really well before tying the knot, the seven-year milestone is of no consequence. "Then it just signals seven more years of good stuff. Otherwise, it can spell trouble" she opines.

Here's how - "A friend of mine got married thinking she knew her husband. Four years down the line, she had a few nasty shocks as she saw (and fell victim to) her partner's temper. By year six, she had enough. She even refused to support her partner through therapy. As they say, 'when hardship walks through the front door, love walks out the back door'" shares Sania.

Being equals in a relationship founded on shared dreams and values is also a key to happiness. Otherwise, by year seven you may find your differences catching up with you!

Prior to 1955, the phrase seven-year itch indicated a condition that supposedly lasted for seven years. Since the early 19th century, the seven-year itch (or camp itch or army itch) was the name of an irritating and contagious bacterial skin ailment. As a metaphor, seven-year itch stood for anything that was annoying and was also often used to suggest punishment for antisocial behaviour - "he should be given the seven-year itch and not be allowed to scratch!"
