77% Of India Prefers Arranged Marriages
|
So, is love lost after all?
Of course not. We wouldn't be Indian if we gave up on love, now would we? As a race, we're lovers and romantics - not cynics. So love features prominently in our lives.
It however appears, that love too is changing. Where earlier you had couples loving each other till 'death do us part', today it is more about till 'debt do us part'.
Love marriages too have become 'arranged' in some ways. It is rare to find a couple that falls in love and gets married immediately or without weighing all the pros and cons. Most young couples in love have already discussed at length their values, dreams, aspirations, aims and core beliefs. A large percentage of lovers even meet and socialize with each other's families to get their feet wet so to speak.
So, what does an Indian marriage mean today - and is it love or arranged?
In effect, it appears that India seems to be redefining its own boundaries. As is historically our tradition, we are once again taking the best of different cultures and creating a unique Indian blend from it - a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The new Indian marriage is somewhat arranged and somewhat love. The new Indian family is a little nuclear and a little joint. The new Indian wedding is all glitz, glamour and hungama.
What is constant is that as Indians we continue to revere the institution of marriage, believe in the power of love and simply - adore our families. The West could take a page out of our books...
