Death & Love

Can 'love' ever spell doom in a marriage? (Part VII)
How can death be a form of love? And given its final nature, wouldn't it always spell doom in a marriage?
It seems so obvious, doesn't it - death signals the 'death' of love. But the connection is deeper.
Sometimes, partners may live on, and still, the death of a third may end their relation - just as it happened with Somesh and Radha.
They were a happily family - Somesh, Radha and their son Ishant. Both parents worked. They were an upper middle class family. The couple was well adjusted to each others ways. As for Ishant - well, he was not a model son! He played pranks and was very naughty. And yet, he was the apple of his parents' eye.
Death puts paid to many dreams
Somesh and Radha were broad-minded, in the sense that they never forced Ishant to take up conventional study after class XII. He agreed to pursue a graduation degree by correspondence, even as he composed songs for his first album. Yes - Ishant had been lucky. He had been 'spotted' by the talent scout officer of a music company at a party where he played some of his music. Soon after, he was awarded a contract to compose two songs for a multi-artist album on 'Indian country life'.
His parents were ecstatic. They were ready to do anything to further his career. So when he requested to spend sometime in Goa, as he believed the environment was more conducive to his work, Radha relented very easily. Somesh took time - he would have preferred Ishant to finish this first assignment working from home in Mumbai.
Goa was where the accident took place - a road accident that killed Ishant on the spot.
A killer blow
Both parents were naturally devastated. It was more than the death of their son. It was the death of so many dreams they had shared as well. To Somesh, it also seemed to be the end of his life, his aspirations for the future.
This became more apparent as time wore on. A year later, on Ishant's first death anniversary, Somesh's wounds seemed as sore as when they had received the news of his passing away.
Radha - being a college teacher - had immersed herself in extra-curricular activities to spend more time with youth. She had this thought that by giving them her time and energy, she would pay off any sin she had committed by falling short in looking after her son. Of course, this work also gave her a sense of calm and commitment.
But it wasn't so for Somesh. A financial consultant, his career had already reached a pinnacle. He felt devoid of purpose. Seeing Ishant take the Indian music scene by storm had become his life's purpose. Now - that had been snatched away from him.
