Say No to Dowry
The parents of a dowry victim are as guilty, if not more, as the in-laws of adding to their daughter's woes. We tell you why...
Asking for dowry in marriage is against the law in our country and we're all aware of that, aren't we? But, dowry deaths still continue to happen across the world. In India, and perhaps elsewhere too, it's a crime to kill somene or even commit suicide. When a woman commits suicide, the in-laws are mostly held responsible even if they haven't exactly committed the physical act of killing. The lawyer can prove that by verbal or physical abuse, the poor woman was left with no choice but to commit suicide. In simple words, induced or forced suicide is murder in the eyes of the law.
In most cases, it's not just the in-laws but also the parents who are actually responsible for the death of their daughter. Many a times when a new bride (newly-married woman) dies under suspicious circumstances, her parents and siblings point fingers at her in-laws and end up saying, "At the time of our daughter's wedding, we gave as much dowry as we could. Even after marriage the in-laws continued to harass our daughter and kept asking for more. We knew they were harassing her and would beat her up quite often, but there was nothing we could do. Everytime she came crying to us, we tried to settle down the matter and send her back home. Now, we're regretting. If we would have taken a stand then, our daughter would have been alive today."
So, why are only in-laws to be blamed for it? Aren't parent's equally responsible? It's high time we all take a stand against dowry and stop investing too heavily in a wedding. Are you ready to take a stand? If yes, click on our newly-launched game 'Angry Brides' that was launched to create awareness and showcase the company’s stand against Dowry. After all, Shaadi.com believes that marriage is an institution of love, where there is place for togetherness, mutual understanding, family values & emotional support.. not dowry!
