All's well that ends well?

All's well that ends well? "My father is having an affair."

"What?"

I was stunned. One does not hear such words everyday, especially from an 18-year-old girl.

"With whom?... since when?... how do you know?... does your mother know...?" A thousand questions ran through my mind. And I could ask none. I just stared at her.

"There's another woman in my father's life," she said, as if to simplify the matter for me.

"Oh!" was all I could come up with. What does one say in such situations?

"It's hard to believe, isn't it?" she reflected my thoughts.

At last I found my voice. "Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Your mother..." I couldn't even begin to think about the woman's reaction...

"My mom doesn't know about the affair. And my father doesn't know that I know," she said simply.

"Will you tell them?"

"I'm not sure. May be some day. But right now I have decided to keep quiet."

"And let the matter go further?" I asked incredulously.

She just shrugged her shoulders.

"It might worsen the situation if you don't talk about it now." I pointed out.

To my astonishment, the girl actually smiled on hearing this.

"What's funny?" I couldn't help asking.

"Come to think about it, it's really funny in a way," she said, shaking her head slightly.

"How so?"

"Our family life has actually improved now."

"Huh?"

"Yes. There are fewer quarrels now between my parents. Papa looks more relaxed and laughs more at home. He was always attentive to me; after all I am their only child. But now he is more expressive with his emotions. He is even more tolerant of mom's tantrums."

"That's his guilty conscience," I ventured.

"May be. But there is more to it. He actually seems to be a happier man. And he now wants everyone to be happy."

"If you noticed this change in him, your mother must have too. A wife would suspect immediately," I pointed out.
