We may talk of women's education and liberation, but it's true that even today women are subjected to domestic violence in this country. It's really sad when we see cases of dowry, rape, molestation and suicide everyday in the newspapers.
Now it's high time for women to become more aware of their rights and fight for their own cause.
For this, every woman must know that the laws of our country as enacted by the Indian legislation are very judicious, strong and strict when it comes to atrocious wrongful behaviour and conduct by anyone towards them. There are several ways through which an aggrieved woman may invoke the criminal legal process against a wrong doer, who may be her husband, friend, family member or any one subjecting her to cruelty or any other criminal behaviour.
Every woman has her legal rights given by the Indian legislation against any kind of criminal behaviour - whether physical or mental - committed on to her. Anyone committing criminal offences against a woman shall be held liable under the Indian Penal Code 1860, which follows serious penal implications.
An aggrieved woman may invoke the criminal process under the Indian Penal code under the following Acts viz.:
- Section 375 - Rape
- Section 494 - Marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife
- Section 497 - Adultery
- Section 498 - Enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman
- Section 498 - A Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty
- Section 509 - Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of woman
- Section 354 - Assault or force a woman with intent to outrage her modesty
