Having said that, post-interval, the film does tend to teeter towards the melodramatic and there are a few scenes, towards the end especially, which could have been best avoided. The good thing is they do not spoil the flavour of the film but they do try.
What makes this well-written movie an experience is Amitabh's perfect grip on his character (not to forget his inherent charm) and Tabu's incredibly controlled and superior performance. As always she invests myriad dimensions into her role and raises the bar on acting. Both Amitabh and Tabu bring alive Buddha and Nina (individually as well as a couple) with the special chemistry they emanate onscreen. Paresh Rawal as usual is par excellence as the traditional, illogical, quirky father. Zohra Sehgal is her charming and youthful self at times even beating Amitabh (who plays her son) in scene stealing! Special mention has to go to the little pixie Swini Khara, who endears her way through to the audience's heart by her straight-talking, no-nonsense precociousness. Marks again to Balki for bringing together the perfect ensemble cast!
Cheeni Kum is not your mass movie. It has refined sensibilities with a brand of humour that is sweet, sour, tangy, bitter and salty all at the same time. Irreverent and brazen at times it may even ruffle sentiments. But that does not change the fact that the movie is a class apart, a unique example of realistic yet entertaining yet well-made cinema.
