Money is the number one cause of arguments among married couples, yet surprisingly few address this issue. Now with both the partners being earning members, planning finances is a big responsibility.
It is imperative that couples discuss important issues, such as handling debt, buying a home, planning for kids and retirement, creating a financial safety net with insurance and emergency funds.
Shaaditimes spoke to couples to know how they handle this sensitive issue.
Vidyanand and Gowri Joshi
Do you consult each other before taking any important financial decisions?
Yes, we consult each other every time we have a financial discussion. All sorts of decisions, small, medium or large, are joint decisions. Trivial decisions include grocery shopping whereas major decisions are probably those about a car or a computer.
Who manages the finances?
I manage the finances. My wife also pours in her money. But, I am the one who keeps records and does the budgeting.
Do you hold individual bank accounts or joint bank accounts?
We hold joint bank accounts.
Have you planned for the future? How?
We have done some short-term planning. We have made investments in fixed deposits. But, we haven't been able to yet make any long term plans. We do intend on having a joint insurance policy. We are working towards it.
Have you ever fought over money?
Touch wood. Not yet!
Both, Vidyanand and Gowri, are professors.
