Money is the number one cause of arguments among married couples, yet surprisingly few address this issue. Now with both the partners being earning members, planning finances is a big responsibility.
It is imperative that couples discuss important issues, such as handling debt, buying a home, planning for kids and retirement, creating a financial safety net with insurance and emergency funds.
Shaaditimes spoke to couples to know how they handle this sensitive issue.
Lipika & Sanjeev Verma, Management professionals
Do you consult each other before taking any important financial decisions?
Lipika: Yes, being a couple it's imperative for both of us to discuss and take each other's advice before investing or spending money.
Sanjeev: We plan out our investments together because there are many things, which I know, and many, which she has knowledge about. So, to be on the safer side we discuss and then take a final decision.
Who manages the finances?
Lipika: We generally take it as it comes, there's no demarcation as such that only he or I will incur the household expenses. Also being working professionals, I manage my own and he manages his own finances.
Sanjeev: Both of us.
Do you hold individual or joint bank accounts?
Both.
Have you planned for the future? How?
Lipika: We don't get the time to keep stock of the market rates and shares. We go for basic savings like PPF and other infrastructure bonds.
Sanjeev: Actually, we don't get the time to read about the market trends, so shares don't form an integral part of our investments.
Have you ever fought over money?
Never, we are old enough to solve our disputes in a mature fashion.
