Wall colours
Shraddha asks,
I want to paint my 1 BHK of 500 sqft (living room 100 sqft, kitchen - 120 sqft and bedroom 125 sqft) and the height of my entire house is approx 10-12 ft).
My living room has three walls and one window wall. I would like to place a sofa cum bed near the window and a semi circle type small TV unit in the corner near the window opposite the wall. I will minimise the furniture in the living room so that it looks bigger. Kindly suggest that in what colour scheme should I paint my living room so that it looks ethnic, modern and spacious? I wish to paint the wall opposite to the window in deep red / pure red colour. Will this look look good? What colour furniture, flooring, curtains and sofa would be the right co-ordinates?
Dear Shraddha,
Since you have a compact sized apartment, I suggest you use light colours on the walls and paint the ceilings in a lighter shade of the colour you use on the walls.
However, I like the idea you suggest of painting the wall opposite your window in red colour. If you have a red wall you can go for furniture that has neutral shades such a beige, grey, etc. or if you want to explore additional bright colors you can go for orange, yellow or even a deep midnight blue color. For the flooring, limit the floor colour (tile or carpet) to a neutral shade and if you wish to brighten the floor you can always add colour by using rugs.
Colour combinations
Shyamanta Dutta asks,
How can we decide colour combinations? My favourite colours are - leaf green, purple, white, blue.
Dear Shyamanta,
Colours when used in combination can either complement each other or contrast each other. Now colours that complement each other are easy on the eye but colours that contrast each other always stand out and get noticed. Colours can also belong to the warm end of the colour wheel such as reds, oranges and yellows or belong to the cool end of the color spectrum such as greens, blues, violets, etc.
The colours you mention that you like - leaf green, purple, white and blue, all seem to belong the cool colours range. So go for it and create a home with a Mediterranean feel.
Make room look larger
Divya asks,
How can I make my hall (living room) look more spacious and modern?
Dear Divya,
To make your living room look more spacious and modern you should try and use furniture that is more streamlined and compact. Avoid using large bulky furniture. Using decorative mirrors can also make your room look larger.
