How important are designers?
The bottomline remains that designers help you to get that added advantage, the technical aspects right, which a common man may not understand. But, if your budget does not permit, you can yourself design your home, with only minimal consultation from a designer. Remember, a good home must be made, not bought.
5 Tips to make your house look 'renovated':
Rearrange your furniture - It always works. Even frequent visitors will be surprised, "When did you redo your house?!"
Finger paint or hand paint one of your walls - This is a wild idea but very effective. Colourful walls always infuse a feeling of freshness. So go for a yellow, green or blue wall. The wall can become a conversation piece by hanging your family photographs.
Take some old saris and make then into curtains and sofa covers - Specially those with golden, red and green borders, which your wife never liked. You can put the saris on the wall, or use as semi-curtains for paintings. This gives a very ethnic look. You can make covers for the back rest of sofas and chairs also.
Green house effect - Create a 'greenery effect' with artificial plants. This can liven up a dull room. Embellish the room with little flower arrangements. Add potted plants on the window sill, table tops, etc.
Play with lights - Buy a few of those cheap, road side colourful glass or plastic chandeliers - red, blue, green, yellow and such colours, put a light bulb in each of them and hang them in the corners of your room to give a very colourful effect. Simple paper lanterns also look very interesting. Even pedestal lights create a very pleasing ambience by adding a touch of drama to the room.
