Furnishing Your First Home On A Budget
|
''And they lived happily ever after''... the fairy tale wedding celebrations have drawn to an end and you are all set to create your new home together.
Although at this point of time creating a picture perfect haven of comfort may seem a tall order, styling and furnishing your home on a budget is not impossible. Let your creativity and imagination run wild and you'll see your dream home unfolding before you.
List down basics: Whether you rent or buy your first home you would have spent a lot of money on the actual cost, advance or broker's fees. This will leave you with no option but to prioritize and furnish your home accordingly. Before you make up a realistic budget decide on whether this would be a starter home or whether you would be living in it for a reasonable length of time. Find out each other's tastes and preferences, whether you would entertain often and whether you would have overnight guests.
- Budget it: Once you have the answers to these questions, prepare a realistic budget and decide to spend the money wisely by buying only what you can at this stage. Don't go overboard. First buy the centerpieces for each room. These would constitute the bare essentials - the sofa for the living room, the cot, mattress and bed linen for the bedroom, the dining table and chairs for the dining area and cupboards for storage.
Scout around for the best buys: Go in for double duty items like a futon which can double up as a guest bed, a table with drawers which can store things as well as hold the T.V and the like. Always invest in good quality items, which are worthwhile in the long run. Look out for people who may be moving home and are planning to sell their furniture. Look into auction shops - you'd get good quality items, which would probably require only a fresh coat of paint. Similarly, showrooms may also be ready to sell their floor samples for less.
- Use inexpensive materials in abundance: There is a wide variety of cottons available. Use them for your draperies and cushion covers and team them with brightly colored throw pillows. Use expensive materials judiciously. Use bright and warm colors in small rooms to make them inviting.
- Accessorize: As newly weds you'd have received gifts like lamps, picture frames, vases, paintings and rugs. Make the most of these and display them in a manner that makes them great conversation pieces.
- Last but not the least, dress up the floor: You have numerous eco-friendly and budget-friendly options like jute, nylon and synthetic. Go on and make your space inviting and cozy.
And last but not the least; remember that whether your décor is minimalist or contemporary, comfort is the key.

- Switch accessories with the season. You can have a new look every season just by adding throws and pillows and by bringing in fresh blooms of the season.
- To make a small room look bigger add a mirror as an accent piece.
