Breathe easy
Kumar asks,
I am 29 year old unmarried man, living in Kenya. Since last week, I realise there are some small bounds which look like burning skin around my penis tip. What could be the reason? It does not hurt.
Dear Kumar,
If you are panicking about the small, white, pin-head-sized spots that have appeared on the your glans penis, breathe a sigh of relief - they are completely harmless. They are termed as "pearly penile papules" (PPP).
Pearly penile papules (PPP) are tiny, dome-shaped to filiform skin-colored papules that typically are located on the sulcus or corona of the glans penis. Commonly, lesions are arranged circumferentially in one or several rows. They are commonly mistaken for a sexually transmitted infection such as genital warts, but are in fact entirely harmless. You can not contract them or spread them. They also do not itch, weep or bleed - but if they do, make sure you see your doctor.
It is believed that these papules are more common in uncircumsised men, and also men in their 20s and 30s, however, the mechanisms underlying their development remain unknown.
The fact is that no conclusive cause is known. No treatment is required, because PPP is not hazardous to health and under no circumstances should you attempt to remove them yourself. Even so, if you are worried in any way, do not hesitate to get examined by your doctor.
