The Female Condom: FAQs
|
With AIDS a continuous threat and STDs on the rise, it is hardly surprising that women want to take charge of their lives - including their reproductive cycles. The female condom is one more step in the direction of female empowerment.
It provides women the right to choose if and when they want to have a baby and to protect themselves during sexual encounters.
So, what is a female condom?
The female condom is a sleeve-like sheath or pouch that is used by women during sex. It is made from polyurethane and lines the entire vagina.
There are two rings at each end of the approximately 6 inch long pouch. The smaller ring at the closed end is inserted into the vagina. This helps to hold the condom in place inside the vagina and prevents the sheath from bunching up during penetration. The larger ring lies over the outer lips of the female genitals to protect against any semen spillage.
Is lubrication required with female condoms?
No. Most female condoms are already lubricated. However, if you feel the need for extra lubrication use a water-based lubricant. Oil based lubricants can damage the latex.
Can a female condom be re-used?
Due to its higher cost than male condoms, people do try to reuse female condoms. However, this is highly unadvisable. It is best to use one condom for just one sexual episode.
Can a male condom and female condom be used simultaneously?
No. It is best to use either one of the two. The friction between the two condoms can cause them to break.
How do I dispose the condom?
A female condom (or a male one for that matter) should never be flushed down the toilet. The condom can get stuck and result in expensive plumbing repairs. It is best to remove the condom gently, retaining the sperm inside the sheath and throwing it into the dustbin. You may want to wrap it in tissue or paper before throwing it away for hygiene purposes.
Can it be used during anal sex?
Yes, the female condom can be used during anal sex. However, never use the same condom for vaginal and anal sex. Also, the female condom can be rather uncomfortable during anal sex. The male condom would be more comfortable in this case and most people prefer that.
How to wear the female condom?
Wearing the female condom the first time may be a little difficult and uncomfortable. However, with repeated use, the female condom gets to be as comfortable as the male condom.
To wear the female condom, open the packet and choose a position most comfortable for insertion. You can stand, lie down, squat or raise one leg. Then squeeze the smaller ring at the closed end of the sheath and insert it into the vagina. Using your index finger push the sheath as far into the vagina as you can. Ensure that the sheath does not bunch up anytime during this process and is well lubricated. Let the outer ring lie on the outside area of the vagina.
It is always preferable when using female condoms to guide the penis into the vagina during intercourse.
Where can I buy the female condom?
The female condom is becoming more freely available at chemists. Soon you can look forward to buying female condoms at regular vending machines that dispense male condoms.
