How to be an effective communicator
|
The skill of speaking could be improved upon:
- Know what you speak - get to be aware of your thoughts and feelings and also the intensity.
- Speak clearly - distinctly - correct your pronunciation (refer your dictionary for right pronunciation).
- Speak with a speed that the other person will be able to follow. Do not be too slow or too fast.
- Speak with the right kind of tone, depending on the situation and the person being spoken to.
- Look at the person you are speaking to.
- Understand the person you are speaking to.
Generally, a habit of reading must be cultivated. Read newspapers, magazines, article, and fiction. But the Art of Reading is important.
- Read a passage quietly to self, several times - 10 times
- Read the passage aloud so that you can hear - 10 times
- Read the passage in front of a mirror and see yourself - 10 times
From the Art of Reading, you could develop into a course of Public Speaking, which however, is another distinct area of development.
The Art of Writing too holds equal importance.
- Write you feelings or thoughts as they come.
- Read after writing.
- Feel the impact of your writing
- Feel the sequence of your feelings and thoughts.
- Rearrange to feel the impact of your writing.
- Review
Continuous efforts do yield results and will gradually improve the skills of reading, writing, expression which together will culminate into effective speaking and a tendency to hear rightly. Together, we will be in a situation to muster the Art of Verbal Communication.
Yet, to be an effective communicator, the other area of nonverbal communication will have to be addressed.
