In the pursuit of excellence as the wave of gym frenzy crescendos taking the country by storm Shaaditimes drops in at the exclusive Five Spa in Juhu.
A cozy state-of-the-art gymnasium nestled near the sea it offers expert guidance and counseling in nutrition and fitness at all levels. Although, Five Spa was launched officially less than a year ago it is growing exponentially and expects to open in seven locations across India in the next year.
''Our Pune Spa will be opening next month and the one in Cuffe Parade, South Mumbai is slated to open by early next year,'' divulges Manager Pallak Shah. With the music piping in the background the gym gives an aura of a mini-rock concert. At anytime of the day it's filled with the generation nexers to mid-age athletes all pumping iron, flexing their pecs and tightening their abs.
"We have the A-Z fitness formula scientifically conceptualized to provide a complete fitness regime for all - from the novice to expert weight trainer," say enthusiastic Managers, Neville and Pallak Shah.
Like most gyms it has the pre-requisitory trainers and nutritionist on location. What makes the gym interesting is the ratio with a fleet of over a dozen trainers on the premise at any given time of the day guaranteeing optimum focus and individual coaching.
"We believe in five aspects of fitness," says Neville. "That's why we called our Spa "Five" and each avenue leads to the main nucleus of body, mind and spirit. Neither is mutually exclusive from the other."
According to Pallak the five principles of fitness include:
- Cardiovascular
- Muscular strength
- Muscular endurance
- Flexibility

- Cardio is important to maximize the volume of oxygen the body absorbs as it increases and maintains an increased heart rate. Ideally one should be trying to stay within 65-70 percent of one's maximum heart rate.
- Muscle Strength and Endurance play an important role in anti-aging, biological functioning and keeping the mind alert.
- Muscle Strength translates into the power the muscle has to lift poundage and is dictated by the power of the weightlifter. Repetitive weight training is used by women bodybuilders, novices and athletes such as tennis players that require muscle tone and longevity endurance.
Both 1, 2, 3 go hand-in-hand as you need strong heart and body muscles to be able to lift weights and lead to optimum body physique.
- Flexibility is important as flexibility increases injuries decrease in proportion.
- Body Composition Rate - This is guided by the individual's height vs. body fat. Every inch of muscle is a performing part. You can compare this to a Grand Prix car which looks good but the engine is faulty. This is not dictated by weight because as an individual gains muscle weight / poundage would increase but fat would be lost.
These are the five mantras that the body needs to work in harmony with its mind and most important to uplift its spirit and keep its soul nourished. The concept was envisioned by Fitness pioneer Kaizzad Capadia, a national competitive bodybuilder and the Fitness Director of K11 Fitness Academy.

Frequented by Bollywood luminaries such as Amisha Patel and Bhagyashree the spa trainer would just say that both are dedicated individuals with zeal to improve their respective fitness levels. Amisha, we were told, was on an extreme diet and fitness regime that was specifically created for her. "We would not like to comment on this as each individual has his / her own body type, and fitness level," states Neville. "Age, health, and environmental exposure all are important components in deciding the fitness and nutritional regime made for the individual. Also we have to take factors such as individual intent and goals as intrinsic factors," believes Pallak.

The Spinning Room
Exclusive to Five Spa you can join a group of athletes on exercise bicycles made for this particular workout. Music is loud, the rhythm pulsating and the class invigorating as individuals exercise together on cardio, and endurance.
What's Not?
You can't just walk in and start lifting weights. You have to warm up is the rule... a mandatory 15 minutes to get your body moving and your muscles loosened!
