Safety At A Self Serve Buffet
|
People want a lot of variety and choice in their food, which is why restaurants that serve buffet meals are becoming very popular. Not just buffet restaurants, but even salad bars with their exotic vegetable spreads and different types of tasty dressings are becoming all the rage. However, when you're at a salad bar or in a buffet line, do you ever stop to consider whether the food is really healthy?
More importantly, have you ever considered that your actions could be making the food unhygienic?
No matter how good the décor of any restaurant is or how great the ambience, the food is what makes people return time and again. That is why restaurants go to a lot of effort to put out a tasty and nutritious meal for you. Amongst other problems, the consumer itself is one of the biggest challenges a restaurant faces especially if it is a buffet restaurant.
How so, you may ask?
Let's say for instance, you're enjoying a great buffet dinner. You've tried a few starters and particularly liked one dish. You go to the buffet line and don't think twice about serving yourself in the same plate that you have been eating out of. You spoon the food onto your plate, the serving spoon touches your dirty plate, and the same spoon is put back into the rest of the food. Now don't we all do that?
The plate that you have eaten out of may contain bacteria due to the presence of saliva on the food, which is bound to happen while you're eating. So, the minute you put the serving spoon back into the dish, you may invariably transfer the germs to the entire food and make it less than 100% safe to eat.
This example is just one of the ways in which diners can cause hygiene and safety problems at buffets and salad bars. Here's a look at some other unhealthy behaviours:
- Dipping your fingers into a dressing or gravy to taste it. If you do want a sample lick, spoon a little of the food on your plate and then sample it. If you like it you can always take more.
- Starting to eat at the buffet line itself. Many people do this, especially if the line is slow moving. However, not only is this bad manners, but can also be quite unsanitary. So, wait till you get to your table and then start eating.
- Refilling a dirty plate. Always take a new plate when you go for second or third helpings. If that is not possible, at least ensure that the serving spoon does not touch your used plate.
- Ducking your head under the counter or the clear plastic roof. These things are present so as to keep the food safe and healthy. When you duck under the plastic roof to get a closer look at the dishes or better access, you can unknowingly transfer harmful bacteria to the food. So, keep your head out of the food and also make sure that if there are any kids with you, they do the same.
- Spilling the food while serving. Not only is this a waste of good food, but spilled food can be very unappetizing and unsanitary for other guests. So, be careful while serving yourself and avoid spillage.
By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure that the food at buffets and salad bars is healthy for you and your fellow diners.
