Real grooming is inward
Sadia asks,
I'll be getting married soon. Will I need to groom myself before marriage? How will it help?
Dear Sadia,
I always wonder about this...why put so much effort into a single day? Build up so much hype and then, when reality hits, to be brought down so fast and so hard? Anyway, since it's the thing to do...you can make yourself as fresh and fit as possible for the big day. But make sure you maintain it afterwards so that it's not "false advertising" for your husband!
Shweta asks,
I am a 25-year-old woman and need some grooming tips or can you tell me names of some good books that I can find in Delhi?
Dear Shweta,
One of my favourites is "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie who is the grandfather of human relations. I feel that real grooming should be inward...and that is what this book allows you to do. As far as packaging is concerned, then I periodically write articles in this very column, which should hopefully be helpful to you. Watch this space.
Hina Khan asks,
I give training to sales professional, please let me know how should we measure their grooming?
Dear Hina,
The first impression is the last impression, especially when it comes to work. As soon as you groom them, send them to someone who doesn't know them for a five-minute interview each. Even maybe someone like your mother or a good friend should be fine...since these people will anyway be dealing with the average person. In five minutes, which is all a salesperson really gets anyway, they will be able to mark them on their overall impression.
Nirajman Shrestha asks,
If I am to go out on a date:
- what should I be wearing,
- where should I take her,
- can I give her flowers on the first date,
- how should I carry the conversation so that she is interested in me if I am to her (since I have no experience talking with girls I am a quite a book worm less social)?
Dear Nirajman,
Wear something smart and casual. Like nice cotton trousers and a white cotton or linen shirt. Classic and cool. You can take her to a place where young people go to hangout.... A good idea is to go for a movie first, and then have dinner. That way you have something to talk about. Coming back to dinner....a fun, young place with pizzas and stuff should be easy. A place that's buzzing, because too much quiet will make both of you guys nervous. Flowers are a burden...maybe a single rose or a box of chocolates would be nice. Don't worry so much about what you say. Be honest, real...don't try to impress for the sake of impressing. If you are sincere as a person, that will show through.
Rajendra Agrawal asks,
Why it is necessary to have a good personality but not knowledge when we go for interviews. Why do people judge you from your personality?
Dear Rajendra,
In today's world, everything is very interactive. No matter what job you are doing, you will have to meet people (potentially clients) who will or will not work with your company depending on your personality. You may be very knowledgeable, but if you are not pleasing, then the work is gone. That is why personality is so important. But personality without knowledge is false and hollow. So strive for balance. You already have the knowledge, now spruce up your personality and go for it!!
