Value education
Rigitha asks,
Is it okay if I behave freely with my boyfriend in public. Or will it be against our culture?
Dear Rigitha,
Values have to come from within. The more we move towards good values and right thinking, the greater will be our happiness and peace-of-mind in life. Listen, think, analyse. Don't do something just because that's what (you think) everybody else is doing. Do it because you think it's the right thing to do. And then see the results and modify your thinking accordingly.
Feel free
Hitesh asks,
Planning to have a nice time with all my best friends and then later will be attending a business meeting. Is it okay if I eat with my hands in a posh restaurant?
Dear Hitesh,
It depends on who you are with. When you are in a business meeting, then it's better to be formal because you are there for the purpose of advancing your career. However, when you are with your friends, then feel free to eat the way you want! After all, you are paying to have a good time.
On-line or personal invites?
Shajid asks,
It's our 25th wedding anniversary. Do net invitations, suggest lack of etiquette? Kindly suggest.
Dear Shajid,
These days I believe it has become quite common. However, the guests who are senior to you (and whom you wish to impress) may be given a letter or phone call as well.
Self awareness
Vijay asks,
There is a family party next month, and I remember the last time my children had embarrassed me before the guests. Before I teach my children I think I should know the basic table manners so that I can guide them. Please guide.
Dear Vijay,
The basic rule of thumb is to be self-aware. Am I doing something that may be offensive? For example, talking with the mouth full may lead to embarrassing spit-outs. So make sure most of your food is chewed before continuing the conversation. Don't be too messy, if you are eating with your hands. Be clean, comfortable and interesting. And look around at what others are doing. That will help you to learn as you go. It's an ongoing process, and we can learn something nice from almost everyone.
Get proactive
Radha asks,
Is it okay if I complain to my son's teacher about his bad habits at home? Will it reflect in a negative way on my son?
Dear Radha,
Rather than looking at it as complaining, go with a positive attitude to his teacher. The way you say something has more impact than what you say. Make sure you are very well-behaved yourself when you go to meet the teacher. You can say something like, "Good afternoon! I am concerned that my son's behaviour may be detrimental to his future. Since you are trained in this field, can we work together on improving his attitude and approach?" That way, it will be a constructive, proactive meeting. Good luck.
