Can Azoospermia Be Root Cause For Infertility?

Masturbation

Question Swamy asks,
Will regular masturbation before marriage cause low sperm count?
Answer Dear Swamy,

No. Masturbation is a normal and healthy habit, which does not affect sperm counts. Your body produces sperm all the time and you cannot ''run out of sperm'', so please do not worry!

Delayed Periods

Question Pasha asks,
I got married 6 months back. Since then we are trying for a child. But my wife has not yet conceived. I am looking into some changes in her body. Like she has headaches and backaches often and mood swings also. But her period has not stopped and she bleeds only for 2 days. Her lower abdomen has also increased in its size. Is my wife pregnant? Is it possible that a woman gets her period even after conceiving?
Answer Dear Pasha,

No, this is very unlikely. You need to be patient - Nature takes time to make a baby! If your wife is not pregnant in another 9 months, then do a complete workup before starting treatment haphazardly.

Do the following simple medical tests:
  1. Your semen analysis, to check the sperm count and motility.
  2. Blood tests for the following reproductive hormones - FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinising hormone), PRL (prolactin) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) on Day 3 of her cycle, (to check the quality of her eggs). Do this only from a reliable lab such as Specialty Ranbaxy.
  3. A HSG (hysterosalpingogram, X-ray of her uterus and tubes) on Day 8 of her cycle (to confirm if her fallopian tubes are open).

With these test results, we can determine if there is any medical problem causing infertility. If there is a problem, then we can treat it! The chances of conceiving with the right treatment are excellent!

Ectopic Pregnancy

Question Sherika asks,
I am 33 years old and trying for my second baby. But I had an ectopic pregnancy where they removed one fallopian tube. Is it still possible to get pregnant again?
Answer Dear Sherika,

Yes, but only if your other fallopian tube is normal. You can check this by doing a HSG or a laparoscopy. However, you do have a risk of having another ectopic pregnancy again and you must ask your doctor to confirm that your pregnancy is intrauterine the next time you get pregnant.

Azoospermia

Question Sarah asks,
I want to ask that if the man has zero sperm count what are the treatments for that? We (my hubby and I ) have been to many doctors but with no result.
Answer Dear Sarah,

It appears you have a zero sperm count. This is called Azoospermia. Can you send me the detailed semen analysis report? Volume? Fructose? PH?

Please repeat it again. Do 2 samples, after an interval of 1 hour (sequential ejaculate), and ask them to centrifuge the sample and check the pellet for sperm precursors. Send me this report once you get it. If it's still zero, then we need to find out the reason behind your Azoospermia. There are 2 possibilities - obstructive Azoospermia; or non-obstructive Azoospermia. You need a testis biopsy to determine if sperm are being produced in the testes or not. A good urologist will do this for you. Ask him to do multiple microbiopsies and send them to the pathology laboratory in Bouin's fluid. Let me know what the report is once you get this.

Intake Of Other Tablets

Question Keerthi asks,
I by mistake took my hubby's tablet i.e. Oligocare instead of having Ovacare. It's on my fifth day of the cycle. Can you please tell me if it affects me in any way as we are planning to have a baby? And also I may go for IUI in this cycle? Is this tablet harmful for the follicles?
Answer Dear Keerthi,

I am not sure what this tablet contains, so I cannot comment, sorry.
