Is Your Laptop Making You Infertile?
|
The availability of new technological devices has sure made life a lot easier. Thanks to the microwave you don't need to slave over a hot stove all day long; vacuum cleaners keep your home spotlessly clean; computers have made your work life organised and efficient.
To make things even easier, the coming of the laptop meant you could take your work wherever you went. And it is only because of your trusty laptop that all those endless hours commuting can finally be put to some use! But before you put that laptop on your lap yet again, do stop to consider if doing so can make you infertile.
Yes, it is true. Medical research and various studies conducted on the effect of using laptops have shown that using a laptop in the regular laptop position can indeed cause infertility in men.
When the laptop is rested on the lap, the heat generated from the working laptop causes the scrotal temperature to rise. In other words, the temperature of the male testes rises significantly due to this heat exposure - enough to cause infertility. The studies also suggest that not just working laptop computers, but a laptop that is not switched on can also raise scrotal temperature. However, the temperature so raised is not enough to cause any medical problems. Thus, the danger seems to be only in using working laptop computers on your lap.
So the next time you want to work on your laptop, make sure it is rested on a desk or another surface - but not on your lap!
Here is a look at various other causes of male infertility:
- Illnesses such as mumps can cause infertility in men.
- Any accident that causes injury or trauma to the testes can result in fertility problems.
- Low sperm count is one of the leading causes of male infertility. While some men genetically have low sperm count, it can also be caused by many factors. These include excessive drinking, smoking, too much stress, and taking steroids. Undergoing radiation treatment for cancer can also lead to a low sperm count.
- Being exposed to toxic materials such as mercury, lead, vinyl chloride, and cadmium while on the job or elsewhere can also cause infertility.
- If a woman takes a medication known as DES when she is pregnant, it can lead to fertility problems in her male child.
- Inhaling marijuana smoke on a regular basis can also cause male infertility. You don't actually have to be smoking marijuana, but even hanging out often with people who do is enough to cause the damage.
- Certain medications are also known to cause fertility problems in men. For instance, Rogaine is a common drug used by men who are experiencing hair loss. While it helps in reducing the thinning of hair, one of the side effects is male infertility. But the good thing is that it is a temporary problem which corrects itself once you stop taking the drugs. So, if you're trying to have a child and are experiencing difficulties, stop taking such drugs.
Whether you're experiencing fertility problems due to lifestyle factors or some medical conditions, you can take heart in knowing that most male fertility problems are treatable.
Start exercising regularly, eat healthy, and talk to your doctor right away, apart from staying away from the above causes of infertility of course!
