Is it baby-time?
Rupali Sinha asks,
Your article on the use of oral contraceptives is very enlightening. I was detected with a mild case of PCOS problem a couple of years ago. I have been on the OC called Novelon, which is a low dose OC with Hormonal therapy. I have also maintained an ideal weight. I am curious to know if I can have a child now. I am 38 years old. I have a 15-year-old daughter.
Dear Rupali,
Yes, you can have a child now. You can test the quality of your eggs by measuring the level of the FSH hormone in your blood on day 3 of your cycle.
IVF treatment
Uma asks,
I am 35 years old, married for 5 years and have no kids. We have never used any contraceptives. I had a fibroid near the uterus and got it operated. Last year I got IVF done which was a failure. When I went for the check up my doctor said everything was fine but after a couple of days, he said its negative. When I asked the reason, he said it must be due to overdose of medicines. I am very much worried. Can we have kids?
Dear Uma,
Usually there is no need to remove the fibroid, as this does not affect your fertility. In fact, surgical removal of a fibroid can actually cause infertility by causing scarring around the tubes. I need more details about your IVF cycle. How many eggs did you grow? How many embryos were transferred? Any doctor who tells you the IVF was negative because of "an overdose of medicines" is not a good doctor! Repeating IVF treatment at a better IVF clinic would be your best option.
Semen analysis
Surajit asks,
I am 33 years old. I enjoy my sexual life and have had no problems till now. Recently I have undergone semen test and it gave the following result.
Sperm count is 55x10-6/ml, abnormal forms are 25%, motility grade is 1: sluggish & localised motility after 30m is 45%, after 1h it is 40%, after 2h it is 30%, seminal fluid is 2ml alkaline. Is it possible to cure my problem?
Dear Surajit,
This is a normal semen analysis, so please don't worry. Do a complete workup before starting treatment haphazardly.
You need the following simple medical tests:
- Blood tests for your wife for the following reproductive hormones - FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinising hormone), PRL (prolactin) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) on Day 3 of her cycle, (to check the quality of her eggs)
- A HSG (hysterosalpingogram, X-ray of the uterus and tubes) for your wife on Day 8 of her cycle (to confirm her fallopian tubes are open).
With these test results, we can determine what medical problems are causing your infertility. If there is a problem, then we can treat it!
Unexplained infertility
Sophie asks,
I am married for the past 5 years but still unable to conceive even after doing IUI three times. All my tests done are normal. What do you suggest?
Dear Sophie,
If your results are normal, this means you have unexplained infertility. If 3 IUI cycles have failed, then your next step would be IVF. Your chances of conceiving with the right treatment are excellent if you are young.
Is infertility hereditary?
Sneha asks,
In my family only few people have conceived. Will I get pregnant or not? I love children. I am afraid that I won't be able to conceive. What do you suggest?
Dear Sneha,
Infertility is not hereditary and does not run in the family! Please don't worry - 90% of all couples are fertile!
