Abnormality In Periods Can Lead To Infertility

Irregularity In Periods

Question Priya asks,
I got married in last June. We are not taking any precautions since last 9 months. But I'm not conceiving. I visited a gynaec and did a sonography. She told me that my ovaries are normal; this is happening due to hormonal disorder and nothing else. I have irregularity in periods, is there anything to be worried about?
Answer Dear Priya,

The reason your periods are irregular is because you do not ovulate. This is called Anovulation. This maybe because you have PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease). You need the following medical tests.

Blood test for measuring the level of FSH, LH, PRL and TSH on Day 3 of your cycle, so we can find out what the reason for your Anovulation is. Do this from a reliable lab such as Specialty Ranbaxy.

Once we know what the problem is, then we can treat it! Your chances of conceiving with the right treatment are excellent,  if you are young.

PCOS May Cause Infertility

Question Gauri asks,
I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. However, I'm slim and there are no signs and symptoms that I am associated with PCOS other than polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. However with the latest pelvic sonograpy the results were excellent and the ovaries showed ruptured ovulation on the 17th day.

My doctor has recently told me to be without medications and wait for another 15 days for my next date. I have not been getting periods from October 2006 and I had been on medications since then. Will this condition affect my fertility in the future?

I am 23 years old and unmarried. I am really worried about my future? Kindly give me your suggestions.
Answer Dear Gauri,

You seem to have lean PCOD. You may need ovulation induction with 1500 mg Metformin daily.

Cyst In Ovaries

Question Maya asks,
I have been diagnosed with polycystic on my ovaries and my period is very irregular and now I have light period for three months and I am seriously overweight. Can I still get pregnant if I was to lose weight or if I was to remove the cyst?
Answer Dear Maya,

I agree you need to lose weight. You also need ovulation induction with 1500 mg Metformin daily. Your chances of conceiving with the right treatment are excellent if you are young.

Test Tube Baby

Question Ayesha asks,
I want to know that till what age a woman can bear a child and if she gets her menopause can she conceive a child? Can she bear a test tube baby? Is there any chance of artificial way of birth?
Answer Dear Ayesha,

After menopause, women have ovarian failure, which means their ovaries no longer produce eggs. However, their uterus remains normal. Pregnancy treatment options include: donor egg or embryo adoption.

Vaginal Ultrasound

Question Jean asks,
I have just been diagnosed with PCOS and put on Metformin twice a day. I didn't get my periods for 3 months prior and now I am 5 weeks pregnant. Do I still take Metformin and what other precautions should I be taking?
Answer Dear Jean,

Women with PCOD have an increased risk of miscarrying. We have found that the following empiric treatment, based on experience, helps treat many women who have experienced recurrent early pregnancy losses.

  1. Metformin, 1500 mg daily
  2. Folic acid, 5 mg daily
  3. Low dose aspirin, 50 mg daily

Take this for at least one month before planning a pregnancy. When you get pregnant, continue all the above and also take 600 mg vaginal progesterone suppositories daily; till 20 weeks. Ask the doctor to do vaginal ultrasound scans weekly.
