Masturbation
Tariq asks,
I have been having regular sex and masturbation. Lately I have been masturbating every day almost. The thickness of my sperm earlier and now is way different. Will this affect if I plan to have a child?
Dear Tariq,
No. Masturbation is a normal sexual activity and provides sexual release. It will not affect your sperm count or your fertility. You cannot judge your fertility from the look of your semen.
Semen Analysis Test
Bhumi asks,
We have been trying for baby for a year now. We both are 28 yrs old. Recently my hubby has got his semen analysis test done and here is what report says, Ph: 9.0, volume: 1.0 ml, sperm concentration and total sperm count are: 97.2 mill, Motile spermatozoa: 80%. We are mainly worried about his semen volume; can you please guide us if he needs to be on some kind of pill to increase his semen volume? I really want to have baby before we turn 30 and my periods are normal (28 days cycle).
Dear Bhumi,
This is a normal semen analysis report. There's no need to do anything for him. Do a complete workup before starting treatment haphazardly.
You need the following simple medical tests:
- Blood tests for you for the following reproductive hormones - FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinising hormone), PRL (prolactin) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) on Day 3 of your cycle, (to check the quality of your eggs). Do this from a reliable lab such as Specialty Ranbaxy.
- A HSG (hysterosalpingogram, X-ray of the uterus and tubes, on Day 8 of your cycle (to confirm your fallopian tubes are open).
Please send me the detailed test results and medical reports. You can scan them in as a single PDF file and email them to me. With these test results, we can determine what medical problems are causing your infertility.
