Difficulties In Menstruation
Ishu asks,
I am 17 yrs old and I am having menstruation problems. My cycle is not proper since the past 6 months. I am not getting my periods. Please help, as I am very tensed. Even my mom is tensed and she is getting wrong notions.
Dear Ishu,
The reason your periods are irregular is because you do not ovulate. This is called "anovulation". This may be because you have PCOD (polycentric ovarian disease). You need the following medical tests:
1.Blood test for measuring the level of FSH, LH, PRL and TSH on Day 3 of your cycle, so we can find out what's the reason for your "anovulation". Do this from a reliable lab such as Specialty Ranbaxy. Once we know what the problem is, then we can treat it!
Delay In Pregnancy
Lina asks,
I had an abortion 3 years back, by the vacuum suction method without any complications. I do not want to get pregnant for another 1 year. Is it safe to take oral pills to avoid pregnancy? Are there any prescriptions of oral pills for those who have undergone abortion or it is the same for those who have never had an abortion. I do not want to inform this to my family doctor, that I have undergone an abortion.
Dear Lina,
Yes, birth control pills are very safe and effective. You can buy them from any druggist. If you do not wish to tell your family doctor you had an abortion, you do not need to do so. A past abortion will not affect your prescription for birth control pills.
Past Abortions
Smitha asks,
I had abortions twice though that was almost 7-8 yrs ago. Now I have regular periods and I am married to my boyfriend. So we are planning for a family. I am inquisitive to know whether my past abortions will effect my future conception.
Dear Smitha,
If the abortions were done safely in a good clinic without any complications, it's very unlikely that it will affect your fertility so please don't worry about it. Illegal abortions; or those which are complicated by infection or bleeding, can cause infertility because they may damage the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
Ovarian Drilling
Umarba asks,
I am trying for a 3rd baby since 6yrs; I did IUI twice, but no result. My problem is I have PCOD, and my Doctor has advised to have a laproscopy done for ovarian drilling.
Dear Umarba,
This is an effective treatment only for those women with PCOD - who have large ovaries with increased stroma on vaginal ultrasound scanning. Since it can lead to complications (such as adhesions), you should try simpler treatment, such as ovulation induction with metformin. Only an expert with video documentation should do ovarian drilling.
