Stop hair fall
|
Hair here, hair there, and hair everywhere... the first signs of hair loss lead to panic. The mere thought of losing hair spells disaster and immediately all sorts of home remedies make their way into our tresses.
More often than not hair loss is nothing more than a signal of internal imbalance, and once the reason for the signal is determined and treated, our hair goes back to its normal pattern of shedding - which is so subtle that we may not even realize it is happening.
The key is to recognize that our hair reacts swiftly to changes in our body. It is nourished directly by the blood stream and any changes in blood content - be it medication, hormones or lack of nutrients can result is hair loss. The most common causes of Diffuse Temporary hair loss or hair loss all over the scalp are:
- Poor scalp condition.
- Dandruff.
- Mineral deficiency.
- Keratin deficiency.
- Hormonal imbalances, most commonly seen after pregnancy, during menopause.
- Thyroid disorders.
- Stress.
- Acute illness.
- Medication, which includes hair loss due to chemotherapy.
- Birth control pills.
- Anemia.
Thus excessive hair loss generally indicates some imbalance in our body. We call it a delayed reaction because the cause of loss generally occurs three months before the actual hair loss. What happens is that some internal imbalance pushes the growing hair, which is in the anagen phase prematurely into the catogen and telogen phase. The hair thus enters the telogen phase (which is a three months long phase) before their time. They rest in the telogen phase for about three months and then fall out. We then start to worry - three months after the actual cause has occurred.
So, when you are losing hair you need to look back by three months to determine the cause of loss. More often than not, once the imbalance in the body is rectified, the hair loss will automatically stop. However, if you hair loss persists beyond three or four months, you have a serious problem on your hands and it is time to see a Trichologist as soon as possible.
Trichologists are often asked what exactly constitutes excessive hair loss - whether it is normal to lose 50 or 100 hair a day. The fact is that there is no standard except the individual one. What is normal for you may not be normal for someone else.
The correct method of diagnosing whether hair loss is excessive or not, is by checking one's Anagen / Telogen ratio (commonly referred to as A/T ratio) or the ratio of growth to the ratio of fall. The percentage of hair in the falling stage is generally 20 percent and anything above this would indicate excessive hair loss.
Depending on the results of tricho-analysis of your hair and scalp analysis to determine the state of the hair follicles, hair loss can be classified into:
- Diffuse Temporary hair loss
- Diffuse Permanent hair loss
- Loose Anagen Syndrome / Anagen Effluvium
- Telogen effluvium
Once your Trichologist determines this, the road to recovery becomes much easier. Remember, hair is your body's barometer, which indicates good health or lack of it.
