Male pattern thinning - Myths and facts
The new millennium is not the greatest time to be a man. This has been an era of diminishing returns for men all over the world. Wondering what we're talking about? Well the 21st century has seen an increasing number of men losing their hair at an alarming rate.
To what do we owe this hair exodus? Stress is the gift of modern life, and with stress comes an increase in the male hormone, and as a result, receding hairlines. So, if you look around and see a large number of balding men, many of them young, you know what to blame.
What makes men go bald? Over the years, large number of anxious young men consult for there receding hair lines. On reaching puberty, males begin to develop thick hair all over the body. Lots of boys grow a moustache, a beard as a sign that they are now grown up, that they are men. But ironically, the same hormone, Androgen, causes destruction of the hair follicles in those who are genetically predisposed to baldness. So, anytime after puberty, a man whose genes dictate it, might begin to go bald.
Diagrammatic representation of Male Pattern Baldness:

Generally, the pattern of loss usually starts with a receding hairline which then advances to thin the top of the head, in a U-shaped formation. The hair follicles shrink with each new growth cycle. The hair shaft narrows, and your hair gets finer. This is called Male Pattern Thinning, caused by a combination of hormonal and genetic factors, and so for years men thought there was nothing they could do about it.
The good news is that baldness is a sign of virility - this means that if you're balding, you know your sex hormones are in good working order. The good hair news is that trichology offers a way in which men can save their hair and do not have to live with baldness, if they choose not to. What trichologists discovered is that even though the follicles of a person suffering from Male Pattern Baldness are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth.
For years, people have been using hormone products, which counter Androgen hormones like DHT. The problem with these is that they have side effects. However, one of the greater discoveries in the field was that of Seranoa Complex, composed primarily of the Saw Palmetto fruit and a stem called Horsetail. It has been found to be extremely useful in combating Male Pattern Baldness.
So, useful in fact that it has found more than one celebrity beneficiary. The latest in the long line of glamour folk to use Seranoa Complex is a famous leg spinning Aussie cricketer. The bowler told an international video conference that he was taking steps to reduce hair loss with Seranoa Complex, and said, "My hair loss has stopped and my hair is growing back." What better testimony to the wonders of this new treatment than from this blonde Aussie himself?
Myths and Facts:
Myth: Tight hats cause baldness
Fact: This one was probably started by the military department, where young men entering the service were required to wear hats and soon showed signs of going bald, or at least of hair thinning. This is due to coincidental timing. The age that young men enter the military is also the same age that male pattern hair loss begins. This is due to hormones, not hats. Hats do cause hair breakage and to a lesser degree, spilt ends.
Myth: Baldness is inherited from the mother's side of the family.
Fact: Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss can be inherited from either side of the family and may or may not skip many generations. Male Pattern Hair Loss usually begins at the age of 18 to 20 years.
Myth: External application will rejuvenate hair re-growth.
Fact: Despite the fact that oiling performs the essential function of scalp conditioning, it will not stop hair from falling if you are having a hair loss problem, nor will it accelerate the rate of hair re-growth. If you do suspect that you are losing hair excessively, it would be advisable to pay a visit to a Trichologist.
