Dear Jyoti,

It is a very common problem during periods as there is a lot of water retention due to hormonal fluctuation. Some ladies gain 1 to 2 kgs during this period but it is lost again within a day or two. Take care of your diet and eat light (which is non-oily and easy to digest) food.

I have been a keen sports person throughout my life. I have played football for 8 years at a state level. I am 26 now, not married, working in Mumbai. From the time I started working, my fitness level has gone down. I don't exercise nor do I keep control on food. Can you suggest me some way in which I can force myself to exercise and plan my diet? Your weight gain is due to loss of muscle mass. Most of the people who play or workout and then stop doing it, later tend to gain weight because 20% of the total food consumed is burnt by muscles. You need to increase your physical activity, always be active, start with simple things – avoid lift, avoid taking a transport for short distances, instead walk whenever possible. Modify your diet and start eating healthy food like fresh fruits and vegetables.

I sit for hours... how can I reduce?

Dear Jayshree,

Many people have 8 – 10 hours sitting job and so lack in physical activity. Try to do physical activity wherever possible. Buy dumbbells specially designed for females – use them whenever and wherever possible. This will help you increase the muscles and muscles burn 20% of the total food consumed. Eat healthy food and avoid empty calorie food (like aerated drinks, chocolates, chips,etc) and fast food.
