Calories to burn...

Nisha asks,
How do I get rid of obesity? I workout on the excercycle for 15 to 30 minutes. I do not know how many calories I have to lose daily or should I give more importance to the distance. My weight is 59 kgs and height is 5 ft. How many calories should a person burn daily?
Dear Nisha,

As per your height you should be around 50 - 52 kgs. You can easily shed of the 7 to 8 kilos. Burning 3000 calories, leads to a loss of 1 Kg. So you should make it a habit to walk for one and a half hour daily. So focus on weight training. Do cardio vascular exercises for 20 to 30 minutes and concentrate more on your upper body and abdominals. If you increase your muscle mass by 2 percent, you will increase your metabolic rate by 8 percent. If you follow this regimen, then you’ll soon be back in shape.

To be slimmer before marriage...

Preeti asks,
I’m getting married in January and I live in USA right now. I have put on a lot of weight in the last one year and I want to become slimmer by January. Can you give me some tips?
Dear Preeti,

Avoid spicy and oily food. Make it a habit to have salads. But please don’t try a crash diet as it will only increase your weight once you stop it. Generally I would advise you to go for 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. But if you have any medical problem, please consult your physician before you do that.

Breastfeeding reduces weight

Sneha asks,
I’m 27 years old and have a 1 1/2 year old baby. I still breast-feed in the evening after returning from work and also during night. I’m 5ft 2 inches tall and weigh 46 kgs. After I delivered, somehow I don’t look healthy at all. How long is it advisable to breastfeed? Is it because I breastfeed I am not putting on weight, if yes how can I stop breastfeeding? Could you please advise?
Dear Sneha,

Don’t be worried about your weight, because you should be fit and healthy, active and moving around, that is more important. Still if you want to put on weight and be more healthy, you can start with Soya protein isolates and whey protein isolates, take one teaspoon twice a day. You can also start multivitamin tablets once a day. It will definitely make your skin more glowing. There is no hard and fast rule for breast-feeding. Ideally after 3 or 4 months, the child can depend on outside food like cereals. But there’s no harm in continuing to breastfeed your child. We will advise you to continue to breastfeed your child. You need not worry about that because if you adopt artificial methods to stop breastfeeding, then it can have side effects on your child. Incorporate soya and whey proteins in your diet and also start taking the vitamin tablets. It will definitely help you. And along with that start practicing yoga and meditation.
