Don't Sweat... Exercise!

Don't Sweat... Exercise! Do you hate sweating but want to enjoy the benefits of a good workout? We have some ideas for you.

The human body is complicated and each one of us functions differently. Some of us could be in balmy 300 degree C weather, and barely break into thin beads of perspiration; while others would be drenched in sweat. There was a time when fitness gurus insisted that a good workout must make you sweat, but new research has proved them wrong. You don't have to be completely drenched in sweat or out of breath to reap the benefits of exercise.

So those of you who don't like to sweat, there's no excuse left! Even thirty minutes of low impact exercises every other day gives us a healthier heart, strengthens our bones and blesses us with a better mental disposition. Move off the couch and try some of these activities that will tone your body, sans the sweaty stuff.

  • SWIMMING: You're in the water, so there's no question of sweating. Swimming can burn calories as much as jogging and at the same time relaxes you. Depending on your pace, swimming is also a great cardio workout. These days there are aqua fitness classes and they include water aerobics, which is a highly effective way to burn calories. Even a few slow laps around the pool can leave you feeling exhausted because you are using all your big muscles and that will tone up your body.
  • YOGA: This age old practice of breathing exercises, stretches and positions is the perfect way to increase your overall flexibility. Yoga tones the body while leaving you feeling calm and collected. Don't get fooled by its slow approach because it can be pretty darned tough. Why else would it take years to master some of those asanas? Steer away from Bikrama Yoga, which is a hot type of yoga, where the temperature is set sky high like a sauna. That's obviously going to make you bathe in your sweat.
  • PILATES: Very similar to yoga in many aspects, Pilates is a form of exercise geared towards the total conditioning of the body, increasing strength and flexibility. Pilates works on your core muscles, which is the key to being fit forever. Posture and back problems are also solved through Pilates. This form of workout is perfect for those who don't want to sweat but do want to feel that bounce back in life!
  • TV TIME: While watching TV, stand against a wall and pretend you are sitting on an invisible chair. Hold the position for at least 30 seconds initially and move onto one full minute. Do this four-five times a day and see your thighs tone in less than a month. Also while watching TV try touching your toes 20 times, followed by 20 crunches and 20 lunges. A daily dose of this will tone your abdominal muscles and hamstrings.
  • WALKING: Studies show that those who walk 10,000 steps daily outlive their peers and are generally healthier too. Make your walking fun. Instead of making walking a sweaty workout that you dread, try wearing comfortable shoes and walk around the mall. Window shop, but don't stop! You could also walk down bazaars during cooler hours but make a point of taking one full round without stopping and then turn around to make your purchases.
  • DANCING: Yes, some vigorous dancing will make you break into a sweat, but consider joining a dance class in a studio where the temperatures indoor are set pretty cool. Learning new dance moves can be invigorating and force you to move those limbs. Forms of dance that are not high impact will not make you perspire profusely. Dancing is a fun activity that our mind does not categorise as exercise and hence we might even forgive the small amount that does build up.
