Research proposes a diet and exercise combo to lose weight
While the women lost an average of 25 pounds, muscle accounted for about 35 percent of the total loss. But despite this loss of muscle, their aerobic fitness and their ability to rise from a chair showed a trend toward improvement. Their strength and walking speed did not change. This suggests that weight loss through dieting shouldn't be expected to lead to increased disability.
Further, Meera's doctor also told her that since lost weight often creeps on again when you come off a low-calorie diet, elderly adults should ideally adopt a weight loss program that is not too stringent and that they can get themselves to enjoy - if nothing else, for looking better and feeling good about that!
That way, their chances of keeping their weight down and having a healthier body composition are higher. Otherwise, as regained weight tends to have a higher composition of fat vis-à-vis muscle, the person could end up with more fat in his / her body than he / she had in the first place.
Meera assured her doctor that she was very comfortable with her new diet and she felt that the exercise was doing her a lot of good. "In that case," he said "you can share these details with your friends. Tell them not to delay dieting and exercise any longer, if they’re overweight and elderly. As they say, better late than never!"
