Monsoon wellness
How to cope with the grey hues and a little blues
|
On the flip-side, Poornima is enthused about the rains, "It's a wonderful time to meet nature and go for a walk, or a jog," she says. She cautions, "If you are running in the monsoons make sure you're wearing the correct foot-wear and proper wind-sheeters to protect your skin from the wind and water." She adds, "Also make sure you follow a terrain that you know. Remember the same terrain becomes mossy during the rains." She also states, "You cannot avoid the dampness in the weather and the humidity in the air, especially if you're in an air-conditioned environment while exercising, so take precaution," she says.
The cool weather and the prolonged downpour also can add calories onto your waistline. "Some people tend to eat more," says Kala. She suggests, "Try to be attentive about what you're consuming. Try to fill up with greens that are boiled / grilled and try to include the complex carbs (rice, pasta)," advises Kala. She avoids aerated drinks but drinks plenty of water. That, according to Kala, is the essential secret. "Also if you get a craving, try drinking any type of tea. Although green tea would be preferential."
Both feel their lifestyle during the monsoon remains unchanged. "No matter how busy we are, we utilise at least an hour for personal exercise even though we are exercising or training others most of the day," says Poornima. She sums it up; "We've always been physically active, so maybe that's why stress, eating dis-orders and other ailments don't feature on our list of problems."

If you're planning to attend an important event or soiree, or are getting married during the monsoons, should you do anything different without minimising on the oomph and glamour appeal?
Louise, a beauty consultant, at the Raj and Mehr salon, says, "Most people are prepared. They will call the beautician to the venue so as not to get caught in an unexpected drizzle or rainfall."
Some common mistakes during the monsoon months.
Hairspray and water do not mix. Your hair will just look flat and clumped with hairspray. A natural dry is the best to get a bounce and shine. Remember, straightening hair has its hazards as it will be privy to the moisture and humidity, which may cause it to frizz.
When you have to choose an up do, Chignon or French Roll are timeless and elegant and look flattering on women of all ages.
Bright colours are flattering but especially against the grey backdrop of the somber rainy days. Also synthetic fabrics don't wrinkle but the natural ones let your skin breathe.
Remember, daytime and nighttime make-up is usually different with the first being lighter in color and touch and the night make-up more dramatic and bold. During the monsoons, you may want to add a little more drama during the day. A bright lipstick or more mascara would accentuate your features.
Don't perm or straighten your hair unless you give yourself one week to settle into it.
Inner beauty starts with A, C, E vitamins which are great also for de-stressing. "A massage works wonders... for anyone's tired muscles. Louise suggests: A lymphatic massage, which removes all the toxins and drains the stresses. It's also great for plumping wrinkles, smoothing pimples, removing sallow skin and dullness and bringing a glow to your aura," believes Louise.
A natural facial with papaya and banana tightens the pores and works as well as the traditional mudpack.
Louise's tips for brides
Look natural and not overdone.
Dark and dusky is sexy. To achieve the tanned look, shimmer in bronze and tawny tones.
Sticker bindis are easier than actually drawing bindis and are preferred as they don't smudge or drip due to perspiration.
Try and change your look at each function.
Be comfortable and true to yourself and your personality. |
