Hyper pigmentation
Gurinder asks,
I have a blemish on my head. Which cream should I use?
Dear Gurinder,
Blemish on your head is a hyper pigmentation. Use skin lightening creams like hydroquinone / kojic acid / Vit C. At night, these creams will help lighten the skin to some extent. Also make sure to cover the areas with a good sunscreen during the day as these skin lightening agents tend to make the skin sensitive to sun.
Acne
Elektra Puri asks,
I am 34 years old and single. I have always had a very clear, glowing skin from my teens. However, in the last one and a half years (when I came off the pill), I have been getting spots that leave a scar / blemish on my face and take atleast 6 months to disappear. Could you please tell me why this maybe happening and is there anything I can do?
Dear Elektra,
Acne is a result of excessive oil secretion, which in turn is influenced by hormones. Pills work wonderfully to regularise the hormonal imbalance. In 90% of cases, the imbalance gets corrected and in 10%, the 1st pregnancy clears it. Consult a dermatologist for proper medical help. Use a good sunscreen during the day and reapply every 3 - 4 hrs. Use a cream containing Vit-C, kojic acid, hydroquinone, azelaic acid, to lighten the marks
Microdermabrasion
Dr Deepa Belsare asks,
I would like to know about microdermabrasion, its procedure and how many times it should be repeated?
Dear Deepa,
Microdermabrasion is a mechanical peeler which removes dead and damaged layers of the skin more quickly and effectively. A highly controlled stream of ultra clean aluminium oxide crystals remove top layers of dead skin cells so that healthy skin tissue is brought to the surface and skin is internally and intensively regenerated. It is indicated in acne scars, blemishes, rejuvenation of the face and stretch marks. It can be done at an interval of 4 - 6 weeks as the skin layers are shed off once in 28 days. 4 - 6 sittings are required, depending on the indication, and it is a painless procedure. Sun protection is a must, following the procedure.
Melasma
Riya asks,
I am 31 and have a fair complexion. But since the last two years, my skin has become dull and I get blemishes on my cheeks and near the eyebrows. I have not taken any medicine / cream. How do I get rid of this forever?
Dear Riya,
Blemish on cheeks and near the eyebrows is Melasma. It is a hyper pigmentation attributed to hormonal changes as the age advances. It tends to be more prominent during stress and menstrual cycle. Unfortunately, it does not go completely. Creams containing kojic acid, Vit-C, glycolic acid, hydroquinone, when applied at night, will help lighten the same, but what is more important is to supplement treatment with a good sunscreen during the day. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 20 or above, all the time.
Vitiligo pigmentation
Ruby asks,
I have been getting white spots around my chin and sides of my upper lip. After a consultation with a doctor, he prescribed cortozon tablets for two weeks. The spots decreased in size while I was on the medication but once I stopped, they have returned. My beauty therapist thinks that it may be vitiligo pigmentation. Is there any way of making them go away?
Dear Ruby,
White spots on the chin and sides of upper lip is a vitiligo pigmentation where in the pigment producing cells in the body are destroyed. It is definitely curable and facial vitiligo shows improvement. Please consult a dermatologist who will decide your treatment.
