Stitch Marks
Amit Sharma asks,
I got two stitches on my forehead with 0.3 g thread. Stitches have been removed but stitch marks are there. How can I remove them? Can the stitch marks be removed with an ointment or cream? What should I do?
Dear Amit Sharma,
Stitch marks on the forehead can be flattened to a certain extent by a cream, which has repairing agents like Contractubex Ointment. There are a variety of procedures like microdermabrasion and glycolic peels, which act by peeling the top layers of skin. 4-6 sittings are required at an interval of 4-6 weeks to get the desired results. The last option would be scar revision, which can be done by a cosmetic surgeon.
Electrical / Chemical Cauterisation
Mythili Madhav asks,
I have lot of black marks on my face and I think it is hereditary as my maternal grandfather; my mom and aunts have the same problem. I also have black marks on my body and they seem to grow by protruding outside my skin such that I can hold it with my fingers like a bead. Is there a remedy to do away with this and the black marks on my face? I do herbal facial once in 6 weeks at Green Trends.
Dear Mythili Madhav,
Black marks on the face like what you are referring to, seem to be warts. These are extra skin growths above the normal skin, which is usually familial, and sun exposure aggravates it more. Best option would be electrical / chemical cauterisation. It forms a scab in 3-4 days and falls off completely within 7-10 days without any scar.
Acne Marks
Sara asks,
I would like to ask you something about acne. I had acne for years and it is less now. But now I have dark marks from acne. What can I do about it?
Dear Sara,
For acne scars there are variety of treatments like microdermabrasion and fruit acid peels. 4-6 sittings are required at an interval of 4-6 weeks to get the desired results. They act by peeling the top layers of skin and thus give a lightening effect. You can use creams containing Vitamin C, Kojic acid, Hydroquinone at night to get the lightening effect.
Skin Disorder
Shivangi Naik asks,
I am a 29 years old married woman. I have a serious skin disorder which causes lots of acne problems, deep scars, blemishes and hyper-pigmentation which is not just restricted to my face but is spread all over my body. (I have taken 4 sittings each of glycolic peel and microdermabration nearly 3 years back for acne problem but it has reoccurred now). Also the scars do not fade off easily. There is severe discoloration of skin wherein my skin has developed different colour like it is whiter in some area and excessively dark in other area, especially on the thigh and lower waist. The hyperpigmentation problem has intensified during my recent pregnancy. Also I have developed brown stretch marks not only my tummy but on my hip and inner thighs.
Dear Shivangi Naik,
Stretch marks occur due to permanent snapping of the elastic fibres of the dermis and hence unfortunately it doesn't go 100%. Using mixture of creams containing Retinoic acid with mild Steroid and Hydroquinone on alternate nights will help in lightening to a certain extent. Frictional areas like thighs tends to be more pigmented or darker and hence unfortunately don't respond well to skin lightening creams. Using dusting powder during the day will help. If you are over-weight, reducing weight will help. It can be lightened to a certain extent. Creams containing Vitamin-C, Kojic acid, Hydroquinone when applied at night will also help in lightening to a great extent.
Flaky Brown Patches
Najah asks,
My son is 15 years old and I suddenly noticed brown patches under his arms and also on his back. The patches on the palm of his hands are very dry and flaky. Can you please give me an idea of what could cause this?
Dear Najah,
Brown patches in the underarms seem to be a fungal infection. It occurs due to excessive sweating. Use anti-fungal dusting powder in the body-folds during the day. Consult a dermatologist who would put you on appropriate medication. Take an anti-allergic tab like Levocetrizine once at night along with anti-fungal tab once a week for 4 weeks. Apply cream like Clotrimazole once at night. Dry and flaky skin on the palms is usually genetic / familial. There is always a history of Asthma, Eczema or morning sneezing in the family. Use a deep moisturizing creams containing glycerine, aloe vera during the day. Internally taking oil capsules such as evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil once a day would help.
