Cosset your skin in winter
|
Ayurveda teaches that each person is a blend of three doshas, or guiding principles within the body --vata, pitta and kapha -- though usually one or two are prominent. Skin problem caused during winter is thought to arise from an imbalance in one's doshas.
These are three primary life forces or three biological humours. Ether and air combine to form what is known in Ayurveda as the Vata dosha. Vata governs the principle of movement and therefore can be seen as the force, which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination. Fire and water combine to form the Pitta dosha. The Pitta dosha governs the process of transformation or metabolism. The digestion of food in our body is an example of Pitta function. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism. Finally, the water and earth combine to form the Kapha dosha.
Here are some reasons of Dosha's imbalance:
- Expose of skin to harsh winter elements such as freezing temperatures and drying cold winds.
- Bathe or shower in very hot water. Also bathing more than once a day, if your skin is very dry.
- Use of harsh soaps to cleanse, as they will strip your skin of precious lipids.
Vata or Winter
Air and motion are termed Vata in Ayurveda. There are Vata People and Vata Season (winter) and Vata time in the day (2 to 6 O' clock)
Vata Modalities - Vata provides the essential motion for all bodily processes and is extremely vital for health.
Mental Attributes: alert, active, a quick mind - flexibility and creativity - quick grasp of things, forget quickly. Low will power, tolerance, confidence and boldness. They can earn money quickly and spend it quickly. They are poor planners.
Imbalanced Vata are fearful, nervous, and anxious and do not rest at all.
Vata remedy - Routine is very useful in assisting the Vata individual to effectively ground all this moving energy.
Vata Diseases - Susceptible to diseases involving the air principle, such as emphysema, pneumonia and arthritis. Other common Vata disorders include flatulence, tics, facial paralysis, twitches, aching joints, dry skin and hair, nerve disorders, constipation, and mental confusion. Their skin is dry and thin.
As winter is hard on skin, dry air and harsh wind can sap moisture from the skin, causing cracking, chapping, and irritation. The best you can do is protect your skin from sun damage. Since wintertime is best for sunbathing, you don't need to slather sunscreen all over yourself, but try to wear a make-up or moisturiser with SPF 15 on your face throughout the winter.
Don't take long, hot showers. They may sound appealing, but they strip skin of its natural moisturising lipids. Instead, take a short, warm shower; pat your skin almost dry, then put on a good moisturiser while skin is still damp.
What You Can Do
For all these materials, use mild, non-abrasive soaps. Try not to use a solvent to clean your hands. (Alcohol, mineral spirits, turpentine, and limonene are solvents.) Solvents can irritate your skin and make you very sick.
Try mineral oil or vegetable oil with soap and water. Some soaps can hurt your skin, if you work with caustics like lime or wet cement. (Soaps that remove caustics and do not cause more damage are pH neutral.) You can use these bar soaps. Caress Oil of Olay Dove.
After you finish work, wash with soap, rinse with water, and dry your hands with clean cloth or paper. After that you can use mineral oil, petroleum jelly (Vaseline), or oil-based lotions. Try not to use lotions that have lanolin, limonene (citrus solvent), or perfumes.
If you use work gloves, make sure your hands and the insides of the gloves are clean and dry when you put on the gloves. If your hands have any of the harsh materials on them when you put on gloves, you can make your skin problems worse. (Don't let the materials get inside your boots, either) Make sure you use the right gloves for the job.
Put on sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more before you work outdoors. Do this even if you have dark skin. Make sure your hands and skin are clean before you put on sunscreen.
