The Complexion Complex

There is undeniably a burgeoning argument that the omnipresent bodies of the media, the fashion world and the film industry are culpable for perpetuating this. Our environment after all plays a massive part in forming our own values and impressions of the world. But it is less true that the media originate these myths than simply take advantage of an already existing way if thinking and use it as a marketable commodity.
The 'size zero' debate threw up the idea of the hand that rocks the cradle being more influential than the media in framing people's beauty ideals. The media are all after eggs themselves born from chickens that raised them with a particular set of values. If we must blame the media then we should probably accept that they have already wrought their 'black magic' on our unsuspecting parent's generation and instilled values that are now too deep seated to be changed. It is not too late however to sway our own hands that rock the cradles of the future.
It would be naïve and just plain impractical to suggest that we should look past a person's appearance and perhaps see the goodness in their soul. But surely the very shade of someone's complexion is a somewhat feeble basis upon which to evaluate him or her?
The plethora of socio-historic factors that have created this pervasive prejudice all share one thing in common: their complete inconsequence in today's society. Shaking off old irrationalities, the aim should be to nurture a culture of acceptance that holds up much more cosmopolitan and healthy beauty ideals. And to put to rest once and for all this destructive and overly simplistic complex.
