Dear Freeda Talib,
There are various brands in the market which has a combination of Kojic acid,Vitamin C, Hydroquinone for e.g. Ban-A-Tan, Niltan, Kojivit gel. Since they are made from natural ingredients they are quite safe and can be used as a maintenance cream once at night.
Acne Treatment
Gayatri asks,
I am 29 years old, I never had pimples till about last year. I had oily skin, but off late I have developed a lot of acne on my cheeks. I have been to a dermatologist - he has prescribed a lot of medicines and a lot of ointments but there is no improvement in the acne. Can you suggest a remedy? The acne is dark red in color.
Dear Gayatri,
Acne is a result of hyper-secretion of the oil glands. Use a face wash meant for oily skin 2-3 times a day. Use a good sun block (SPF 30 or above) 2-3 times a day. You can start with an antibiotic belonging to the macrolide group like Azithromycin once a day for 6 days. Locally you can apply anti-acne cream like Adaphalene gel (0.1%) once at night. Acne at this age could be related to Hormonal imbalance, which can be due to PCOD. Also consult a dermatologist to rule out this who would put you on appropriate medication.
Medication For Warts
Renuka asks,
I have ugly warts like marks on the skin of my arms and legs and they are a cause of constant worry for me. I have visited two dermatologists and was given various topical creams to apply. I was told that they are caused by waxing and in-growth of hair. I would like to know if cauterization would be a good treatment for my problem. How expensive is the treatment and how long will it take to cure it?
Dear Renuka,
Ingrown hair growths are fairly common problems in young girls who wax or shave often. It occurs when the force used to pull out the hair is done in the opposite direction of the hair growth or if shaving is done in the opposite direction of the hair follicle. The best treatment for you would be to laser the hair, as even one sitting of the laser treatment will regularize the hair growth direction. It will help you tremendously. Use a cream containing Retinoic acid on the marks at night.
For Warts the best treatment would be chemical or electrical cauterization. It forms a scab for 3-4 days and falls off within 7 days without a scar. The charge varies depending on the number of warts. It starts from INR 100 onwards.
Laser Treatment For Blackheads
Rani asks,
I have blackheads on my nose. I try to get rid of them but in vain. I have spoken to many beauticians regarding this. They said to do facial or use blackheads strips. By using strips my nose gets darker and nose corners have become black. Please suggest a remedy.
Dear Rani,
A blackhead occurs due to blockage of the pores and excessive oiliness of the skin. Use a face wash meant for oily skin. Use multani mitti pack once / twice a week. You can apply Adaphalene gel (0.1%) locally at night. Use astringent once / twice a week. Clean-up once a month would help. Black marks on the nose mimics blackheads, which are fine hair. Laser hair removal will help in such cases.
