Forget Chai, Drink Green Tea!

Why does green tea score over chai ?

This may leave you thinking that if drinking green tea is so beneficial, its black counterpart could not be far behind. After all, green, oolong, and black teas are all derived from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. However, you know what they say about processing - it kills the goodness of natural foodstuffs! Now green tea leaves are steamed whereas black and oolong tea leaves are fermented. The steaming process ensures that the disease preventing and fighting properties of EGCG are preserved in green tea.

How to brew your cuppa
If this has convinced you to drink up, include two to four cups of freshly brewed green tea in your daily diet. Remember it's essential to go natural - avoid ready-to-drink or instant tea preparations, and green tea capsules.

When brewing your cups of green tea, take precautions not to overbrew the tea as this may ruin its flavour. Follow these instructions:
  1. Use one tea bag or one to two teaspoons of green tea per cup
  2. Bring water to a boil
  3. Allow the water to stand for a minute or so
  4. Pour the hot water over the tea bag or tea, and allow it to steep for 3 to 5 minutes
  5. If using a tea bag, remove the bag
  6. Allow the tea to cool for three more minutes, then drink

Lastly, just so that you know, tea (of any sort) can obstruct the absorption of iron from fruits and veggies. So try to slot your cups of green tea between meals, or add lemon to the tea if you must drink it at mealtimes. Also, as all teas contain caffeine (though less than coffee) don't drink your green tea too late at night if you suffer from insomnia.
