Get in tune with your hair
Hair is an important part of who you are. If you have any doubts about that, think about this - the average person has five million hair on his or her body, 100,000 to 1,50,000 of which are on your scalp.
Now if you've got all your hair, that seems like a big number, but when you start to lose some of it, you realize just how much worth you put in your hair.
Most people take their hair for granted, especially men. However, its only when they start to lose it, do they realize what a crippling blow it is, how much a part of their personality it is.
The bad news is that due to the modern lifestyle, people are more likely to lose their hair at an early age. The good news is that there is more awareness about trichology and that there are scientific solutions to your hair problems. Your hair can be treated medically just like any other part of your body.
Shedding? Don't panic
If you notice hair in your brush, on your pillow, or on the bathroom floor, you don't need to worry. What you need to do is understand the hair growth cycle.
Did you know that your hair is one of the few organs in the human body that actually undergoes a cycle. Each strand of hair goes through three phases:
- The Anagen phase: Your hair goes through a phase of growth for around four years. At any point of time, around 90 percent of your hair will be in this phase.
- The Catagen phase: A resting phase in which the grown hairs are basically waiting to fall out. This stages lasts for about a week and approximately one per cent of your hair follicles are in this stage at any time.
- The Telogen phase: This is the stage that last about three months at which 10 to 15 percent of the hair on your scalp has come to the end of its life and will fall out.
Thus, you see, you're always losing hair. But because, your hair is synchronized to fall out at different times, you don't normally notice it. You need to be concerned only if you notice you're losing more hair than you normally do.
The magic three months
If you think your hair loss is excessive, there's a simple way to determine if you need to contact a trichologist. We call it the magic three months. Basically, you need to remember that your hair is nourished directly by your bloodstream, so any imbalance in your body is directly reflected in your hair," she explicates. Here are a few factors you need to look out for:
- 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.
