Skin care secrets

Moisturisers: your skin is subjected to the sun, wind, pollution amongst other onslaughts during the day and therefore irrespective of your skin type, it needs a moisturiser to keep it nourished and supple. A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter what the skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers, the only exception being those with acne. An oily skin could do with an oil free moisturiser i.e. a moisturiser that will nourish without clogging pores, whereas a dry skin needs a moisturiser with a heavier/ greasier base to compensate for the lack of water. The nature of the moisturiser you use will also vary with the seasons - you may want to use a lighter one in summer and a greasier one in winters especially at night.

An ideal moisturiser should be as bland as possible with a pleasing appearance and fragrance and should not cause your skin to sting or smart on application.

Sunscreens: a must! People think they need to use sunscreens only if a problem crops up but truth is that it should be included as far as possible as routine skin care. Choose a base suitable for your skin type, (e.g. oily skin will do well with an oil free sunscreen) and an appropriate sun protection factor. Sunscreens will not only protect your skin from the harsh effects of the sun like drying and subsequently aging but also protect you from pigmentation which can get worse on sun exposure.

Lifestyle: you are what you eat! And your skin is ultimately going to reflect your lifestyle and general health. Therefore it is important to eat sensibly, see that you are not constipated, drink plenty of fluids and exercise in moderation for your skin to glow with good health.
