Pearls n Swirls
Classic treasures of the sea

Adding a word on what's to come, Nikeeta states, "Subtle colors are in trend so naturally in Oct-Nov-Dec season pearls are going to be in fashion." Do we see a rush on the pearl floor?

Now a few tips on how to make your pearls flatter the woman in you and bring out your best. Nikeeta advises, "If it is black one-piece then nothing like long string of pearls." Though expensive it is generally advisable to go for Akoya pearls for strings as they are the only ones in which getting close matches are possible. Not to mention the superlative finish and luster. The color/overtone could be cream or pink based on the undertone of your skin. "Besides that", adds Nikeeta, "Black pearl strings look extremely sexy as well. More so if the dress is a bit revealing."

According to Nikeeta, if one can afford them black Tahitian pearls are what women should select. They are the only naturally tinted black pearls in the world. All else acquire the colour through irradiation. These large, luxurious pearls are very expensive too, costing anything between 1000$ to 10,000$. "Alternatively, if it is a petite dress which is not dressy then a simple short string will do, in western wear. For long flaring dresses, layered or tassled strings look awesome. As for earrings, long-stringed pearl earrings can look good on anything from churidars to shirts." And of course on Indian wear the sky is the limit with combinations of diamonds and pearls. The South Sea variety is pre-dominant and popular due to its large size and exceptional quality.

Pearl necklace According to Internet surveys, the 14- to 16-inch choker and the 17- to 19-inch princess necklaces are the two of the most popular styles (in the west). But the choker is perfect with virtually every neckline, from an opened buttoned-down blouse to a business suit. This piece looks great with everything from blue jeans to evening wear. The princess necklace works well with crew necklines and turtlenecks. And this is a universal trend.

As Nikeeta surmises, and many women will agree; pearls look best on sarees. Both enhance femininity while complementing each other. "They are even better then diamonds," she says with a smile, "like a woman in love." And I am sure most women will identify with that because diamonds maybe her best friends but pearls are a woman's lovers.

Tips on the investment value of pearls
  • Pearls have as much a resale value as diamonds and hence are as good as an investment as they are a friend.
  • Pearls are not as resilient as diamonds and a scratch may result in a loss of colour which will reduce its resale value.
  • As with first time buying even at resale the color, size and shape of the pearls matter. Hence, here it becomes more important to safeguard the pearl's color and lustre.
  • The larger the pearls the more the resale value due to rarity.
  • Natural pearls have a higher resale value then cultured pearls and might work better as investments.

Tips on buying
  • Always buy your pearl jewellery from a reputed and trusted jeweller. Probably your regular jeweller.
  • The heavier the pearls the more valuable.
  • Genuine pearls have a milky and glossy tone of the nacre. Lustrous pearls have a shiny surface, good contrast between light and dark areas, and strong, crisp reflections. Avoid pearls that resemble dull, cloudy, white beads.
  • In India, Hyderabad is known for its pearls but fakers abound there so watch out. Pearls from all over the world are brought there and designs are mind blowing.
  • In Asia, Hongkong, is a large hub for the pearl trade but beware the stores with shop fronts on the streets. Their rates are exorbitant.
  • Pearls are sold on carat weight and evaluated on its lustre, size, shape, surface and colour. Rounder, glossier, and even pearls are more valuable. Pinkish overtones are more valuable compared to those with green or blue tint.
