Ruby trends
Ms Shreedevi Deshpande, Design Consultant of Ganjam, says, "In traditional styling, 22 kt closed set in South Indian style of Kundala Vellai is fabulous in rubies as this style of jewellery is mainly set with Cabochon Burmese rubies. This style is found in few places like Bangalore, Chennai, Madurai and a few other cities in the South. This is a very rich and regal look which is suitable for wedding jewellery or collectors' pieces."

Deshpande observes, "Rubies look very rich when used in contrast with diamonds as it highlights the red of the rubies. Larger rubies look best when highlighted by the use of diamonds. In the contemporary styling various cuts of rubies are used along with diamonds in 18 kt jewellery."
Ruby's dramatic colour and regal heritage make it the choice of the most discriminating jewellery lovers. Rubies are stunning against a backdrop of white, black, royal blue or emerald green. Rubies set with diamonds in white or yellow gold are a classic. Rubies in jadau jewellery look simply ravishing. They make elegant rings and pendants. Smaller stones are also set in these pieces as well as brooches, bracelets, and earrings. Small rubies are popular for use in anniversary rings. Internationally, pinks and reds are very popular making ruby a popular choice.
A Ruby: Whimsical Purchase... A Sound Investment
Just like a diamond, the 4 C's: colour, cut, clarity and carat are useful when purchasing a ruby.
Clarity - All rubies have inclusions of some kind. The point to remember is the inclusions should not affect the strength of the stone. The inclusions should also not be so many that the stone looks cloudy or opaque.
Cut - Rubies are generally available in ovals and cushion cuts but today there are various other fancy cuts available. They are also available as cabochons and beads.
Carat - Rubies of carats more than 3 are difficult to find. It is always best to get the stone tested when making expensive purchases.
Colour - The most important of them all - the richer and deeper the colour, the more valuable the ruby will be. The point of origin is also a criterion for the price of the ruby. Most importantly, make sure your ruby is natural and not synthetic!
Did you know that the ruby is the second hardest gem? Every one knows that a diamond is the hardest substance on earth and only a diamond can touch a diamond. A ruby in terms of hardness is second only to a diamond. What this means is your ruby is safe for you to wear and enjoy every single day!
