Pooja Sahny Presents 'Memyselfandi'
|
''Memyselfandi'' is the innovative brainchild of International Jewellery Designer, Pooja Sahny, from Antwerp, Belgium.
A jewellery designer, visionary and sculptor of precious metals Pooja believes adornments not only represent an extension of your individualism but speak volumes about your beliefs, your life experiences, your aesthetic inquisitiveness and disposition.
Shaaditimes caught up with Pooja, in her atelier in Belgium to find out what influences her strong minimalist designs and how she subtly yet meticulously meshes the best of East-West influences incorporating Greco-Roman artistry, strong Middle-East Miniaturist sensibilities, avant garde neo-gothic Americanism with historically scrupulous Indian mythological motifs and vegetal scalloped designs.
- As a silversmith what Indian influences particularly fascinate and influence you?
Many of the olden techniques fascinate me; filigree and granulation being my ultimate top two. I create filigree spirals for my epoxy collection. It is a craft in its own. You have to always use as pure a metal as possible. The spirals are made in fine gold (999 gold). Filigree and granulation are best found in the eastern hemisphere countries such as India, Turkey and the Middle East as well as South America. These regions have been practising this technique for centuries and are well-renowned for it.
- Do you have a theme when you are working on your collection?
When I work, I either build upon my existing collections or create a new theme altogether. I don't believe in making solo pieces. The jewels each have to have a sense of meaning behind it, as well as a sense of belonging. Everything should fit into place or can be mixed and matched with another.
I prefer my themes to be a quite out of the ordinary. My collections vary from playfulness to much deeper emotions than meet the eye at first. For instance, the cheese collection is nothing more than my tribute to all cheese lovers (including myself), whereas the heartbeat collection deals more with a connection between two people that no words can properly describe.
- Describe your most recent collection for us.
My recent work has been quite commercial in nature. I have been working a lot with stones as well as focusing upon the surge of men wearing jewels, be it cufflinks or rings or necklaces.
- What made you become a jewellery designer?
There were a million things I wanted to do, and art was my best expression into everything. I never thought of going into jewellery despite growing up in a diamond family and in Antwerp, the diamond capital of the world. I always had a sub-conscious passion for art. I started off making very sculptural jewellery and on occasion I still do. I guess you could say jewellery found me rather than me finding jewellery.
- What type of Indian jewellery do you like?
For as long as I can remember I have loved and will continue to love very traditional Indian jewellery. Kundan would have to be my favourite type of stone. It has a very classy look to it. I also appreciate the Meenakari jewellery from Jaipur.
- What is your favourite adornment, i.e. necklace, payal, bracelet, ring?
Without a doubt necklaces and chandelier earrings.
- What can we look forward to next?
I would like to focus upon a series of cufflinks I am working on which both men and women can wear. I believe my work this far has been quite unique and quirky and I would like to continue the trend.
