Nature of things
The designer of today Shaheen Abbas showcases nature in her creations - paisleys, stars and moons. She has just launched her latest collection, "The Drama Queen" under her label Flower Child. She talks about her designs and the inspirations.
Meet the designer and her muse.
How was Flower Child born?
I discovered my love affair with jewellery only two years ago, which I slowly nurtured into what is now a successful business. It was in the year 2003 that I took up jewellery designing as a serious, permanent career. I started sourcing for my collection from places like Afghanistan, Nepal, and Rajasthan. It was during my series of highly successful trunk shows or, as they are the popularly called, "coffee mornings" held in Australia, London, Dubai and Singapore, that gave me confidence, and in 2004 "Flower Child" was born.
Did you always intend on becoming a jewellery designer?
After I completed my masters in Child and Human development, I started my career being an air hostess. Two and a half years into the job, I married Roshan (TV actor and host). I was always passionate about jewellery. On my trips across the country and around the world, I used to pick up exquisite jewellery pieces. My choices became so popular among my friend circle, that they started placing orders with me. This was, in a way, the inception of my career.
What makes your collection stand out from the rest?
My collection of jewellery sports a strong Indian influence in terms of peacocks, age-old motifs; intricately handcrafted to translate into designs like paisleys, stars and moons and abstract shapes for those bold enough to experiment. It brings to life the many facets of the modern Indian woman.
What are the various metals you use, and what are the peculiarities of your collection?
My collection sees pure silver take on new shapes with an interplay of stonework in colours from pinks, blues, whites and others with a splash of gold polish. The collection includes anklets, jhumkas, chandelier earrings and much more. It represents a bohemian mix of funky jewellery with a feminine touch. I primarily use semi precious stones and beads, coloured glass and crystals.
What inspires you to come up with such designs?
It's amazing to be able to combine my passion for colour with a natural wanderlust to create a collection that is truly and personally inspired. I am basically a gypsy, and my collections are an extension of my personality.
What is the central idea behind "The Drama Queen Collection"?
Summer may force the dressing to be more subtle and understated but what's life without a little dramatic flare! Accessories play an important role in highlighting and styling the entire look and still maintain feminine sensuality. The collection matches mercurial moods and goes well worn with any emotion. It takes pride in making that first dramatic impression that lasts forever. It's for the woman who can wither away the sun with a scorching look.
