Why does a diamond symbolise romance the best?

 Leading diamantaire, Dilip Mehta, Rosy Blue, says, "When you buy a diamond, you don't just buy a piece of history, you buy a legacy. A legacy of your love that will be passed down the generations, that is a token of your love. Nothing captures the essence and spirit of romance like a diamond. A photograph may not last but a diamond will. It will stand the test of time as a memory of the times gone by." Indeed, in this age where relationships fall apart all the time, eternity and forever have never seemed so beautiful.
Ofcourse, credit must be given to DeBeers for promoting the diamond as a symbol of romance. The famous slogan, 'A diamond is forever' has been penned by them and has now gained its place in the sun now. Historically, the Archduke of Austria made popular the concept of a diamond studded engagement ring at the time of his betrothal. The ring worn on the left hand finger was said to connect to the heart, the vena amoris; a vein connecting to the heart of his sweetheart.
Jewellers ofcourse have never had it so good. Be it Valentine's Day for the young and old alike, Sangini, formerly a DTC brand that celebrates marriage, Trinity, the three stone ring internationally that celebrates the past, present and future of a relationship or Platinum Couples by ORRA to celebrate the union of couples who have grown old together, the romance of the diamond has created occasions of purchase for the jewellers. The consumers are buying it and well.... no one's complaining!
Prasad Kapre, DTC, put a lot of emphasis on the "feel good factor" of a diamond. "A diamond is about stature, identity and enrichment. Nothing makes a woman feel as good about her as a diamond. For the Indian woman, adornment has always been a priority. A look at history will only confirm this. Nothing can be more enriching than a diamond for a woman as a celebration of her love."
The diamond also captures the many moods of a relationship. You can bring out the child in you with teddy bears and hearts in diamonds, you can ponder over the symphony of Mozart with diamonds designed the classic way or your heart can skip many a beat as you explore the straight lines and new cuts of the modern world with the mood of Jon Bon Jovi. What more, you could wear the diamond to reflect your mood to your partner - childlike enthusiasm, quiet pondering, old fashioned romance by candlelight or the new age spirited woman. A diamond is versatile, adaptable and a perfect fit for any occasion. It will capture the smile that reaches your eyes and will reflect the tear that falls from it.
Cynics will argue that the concept of forever today is an outdated one. With divorce rates on the rise and relationships falling apart all the time, forever seems like a very long time. My answer to this would be all the more reason why today every one should hope and pray for their love to be like that of a diamond - hard and durable, something to test the sands of times and the trials and tribulations. Diamonds and romance together make as beautiful a symphony as Beethoven.
Romance never dies... It is all around you... it is omnipresent and magical... just like a diamond. When you find it, celebrate it with something befitting. Celebrate it with a diamond.
