Why does a diamond symbolise romance the best? A diamond is the hardest substance available on Earth. It takes a diamond to break a diamond. A diamond takes a billion years under the earth's surface to form itself. In terms of age, a diamond is even older than history, older than civilisation. It is perhaps the best definition of the word - 'forever'. Each relationship has a story to tell; a unique and an individual story. As for love... it represents the most breathtaking emotion of them all. A celebration of life, a reason for being and the union of two souls for eternity. What could be a better way to celebrate this union than a diamond?
A man walks into the showroom of a leading jeweller. In a relationship, contemplating marriage, he and his beloved have stars in their eyes. He wants to choose a symbol of their bond for his beloved - A promise of his love, his devotion, his commitment and a hope of the things to come. What could be better than a diamond that can outshine the darkness of the stormiest starless night, a reflection of hope against sorrow and eternal joy against all odds?
As children, we always used to be enamoured with the twinkling stars in the sky. Which child has not tried to count the stars in a starry sky? As adults, it is a wonderful experience to sleep under the starry sky in an open space. When you wear a diamond, it's like your own star that shines - a reflection of nature's finest beauty captivated in your hand.
In geological terms, no two diamonds are ever alike - a bit like human relationships; would you agree? Each diamond, just like a relationship, has a story to tell.
Just like romance has many moods and hues, so does the diamond. Diamonds naturally occur in hues of pink, canary yellow, blue, green, champagne, brown, black and even red. All these colours are highly prized and are very very expensive. The miner, Rio Tinto, has made famous the champagne diamonds in India and the Argyle mine in Australia is famous for its pink diamonds. The most famous blue diamond is the Hope diamond, ironic for a diamond that is said to be cursed and devastate the lives of its various owners over history.
Internationally, coloured diamonds have been the next big thing for a while now. When Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez, he did it with a pink diamond. All leading jewellers of the world right from Cartier, Harry Winston, Bulgari, Van Cleef Arpels, H Stern, Graf and Tiffany have showcased the beautiful palette of coulored diamonds.
When it comes to the celebration of diamonds with romance, thumbs up should be given to Hollywood. Right from Marilyn Monroe who crooned, "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" to Madonna, to the famous diva Elizabeth Taylor, who even has a diamond named after her during her marriage with Richard Burton, no one does it like the glitterati.
