Real Women... Real Sizes
|
For the bold and the bountiful
Most designers create clothes that are for the pencil-thin women; however there are many who are in touch with reality and take pleasure in designing for large women making them look elegant and beautiful. Few designers realize that an average Indian woman is larger at the hips and that not everyone is a Madhu Sapre or a Kate Moss.
Fashion designer Amy Billimoria likes designing for average to large women. Amy shares tips about the clothes an XL woman should wear that would make her feel confident and enhance her personality.
The fabric for larger women should be such as not to cling to the body else the bulges would be visible.
Dark solid shades like blacks, browns, and beige with vertical stripes should be worn as they define and minimize the figure. " When designing I keep in mind the personality, work and the total outlook of the client."
For office wear straight leg pants, crop cut leg pants or slim chinos with long silken blouse look elegant and smart. A long skirt ...ankle or calf length with a loose fitting long-sleeved top gives an impressive effect. For a very chic look, a scarf does the magic by adding an asymmetric touch. Similarly for evenings wear a knee length front skirt with straight cut and a slight slit is exciting.
Kurtis, which are just below the hips, give a very slender appearance and can be worn for an evening as well as office wear. Pleated trousers, boot pants, tight-fitting and flary skirts should be avoided. Adopt flowing silhouettes that skim the curves and fall gracefully. Scooped and V-necklines, A-line and princess cuts are visually slimming.
The major mistake plus size women make while choosing an outfit is that they opt for baggy, sloppy and extra loose outfits which make them look bulkier and out of shape. It is essential to wear clothes that enhance your body hence well-tailored clothes add shape to your appearance.
Designer Shaina NC known for her exquisite wedding saris advices, "A Sari is the most sensual and elegant wear of the Indian women." A sari has a unique feature of hiding the slightest bulge thus making a woman look graceful. However the fabric plays an important role in creating a sensuous look.
Large size women should avoid wearing zari, crepe, and silk saris because these fabrics would make them look bigger.
Georgettes and tissues are best suited to camouflage the layers of cellulite. Also subtle colors in saris look ethnic even on large women.
A sari is one outfit that can be worn at offices as well as for evening wear. Lemon or sky- blue colored georgette sari would project elegance as a day wear. On the other hand a tissue sari with pearl work and kasab and blouse with kundan and sequins work would be great for an evening occasion.
Today's Indian woman is well attuned with current fashion trends and is constantly looking for avenues to combine smart dressing with cultural and social acceptability, irrelevant to their sizes both at home and at the workplace.
Now that the designers are designing for the large woman making her look chic and graceful, the day isn't far when these women would be walking down the ramp believing in the cliché that big is indeed beautiful.
