This is the quietest corner of the fashion week. But this is where all the business is!
True to the spirit of Pragati Maidan as a set-up for serious business, the designer stalls at the country's most imposing venue are picking up considerable attention. The stalls are one of the highlights of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week of Spring/Summer '08 where you can find all you-name-it designer brands under one roof - Pragati Maidan Hall No.7.
This is the hideout for most of the designers sealing their trade deals when we can't find them in the lounge or the main hall. And right here you can find everything from clothes and bags to shoes and jewellery of any label.
You can find all the designers displaying their stuff here. Not simply those who are participating but even biggies like Manish Arora and Charu Parashar, who are not showing their collection this time. Visit Manish Arora's stall and his spokesperson greet you: "He will be showing this collection Popart at the Paris Fashion Week. It is basically cotton silk with a lot of bright colours with embellishments and mirror work".
There are stalls from different corners of India like the Neelam Narang jewellery stall from Jaipur. "It is a collection that comprises of both an ethnic and a modern range made of pure silver with precious and semi-precious stones and the response of the buyers has been very good," said Neelam.
The Ministry of Textiles also has a display stall of handloom items with fabrics like silk and cotton silk but they are only for display.
Then there are bags and shoes with names like What's Pink by Shalini Gupta and Lisa Jackal by Zeisha Jaffer from New York. "We sell high end western shoes and we are one of the few people who do all-leather stuff with Italian and Portuguese leather. Our main office and biggest market is in New York," said the spokesperson of the label. Adding to it he said, "Generally, middle-eastern people don't come to us but a lot of Europeans have bought from us (this time)."
One of the most happening stalls is of designer Rina Dhaka. The spokesperson at Rina Dhaka stall said, "The collection is inspired from Samode, a haveli in Jaipur. The clothes are soothing just like the Princesses used to wear with colours like limes, white and yellow with a lot of embroidery and patchwork." She added, "The business is really good. Better than the last time but we are only catering to bulk orders this time."
