Sabyasachi's Sultanas - Bridal Sutra Collection

If trousseau shopping is on your list this year, one collection you must look at is the Bridal Sutra unveiled recently by the genius maverick designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee at Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai recently.

Bridal Sutra, the unimaginable confluence of international designing with Indian piety and soul, carried fashionistas, brides and the general audience into imaginary perfection. Sabyasachi Mukherjee brought his uncanny zest for the impossible into the probable, illuminating bridal wear this year in muted blankets of taupe, violet, cyans, multi-facets of vermilions and somber reds, splashy oranges, and ochre.

The Bridal Sutra showstopper was just that - as a mist of gushes and awe filled the auditorium. Top models sashayed in vibrant ensembles of traditional aesthetics with modern inspiration, motif art styling and design.

India's premier designer par excellence Sabyasachi Mukerjee didn't disappoint in his latest collection which continued with his mantra of breathing life into his fabric through his principle of creating imperfection. It's through the imperfections of the human perspective of our surroundings, meshed with cultural traditions and techniques of ancient craft which has evoked nuances of his city Kolkata in each of collections. "I feel clothes should be an extension of one's intellect."

From the original bohemian rhapsody of patchwork regional craftsmanship, Sabyasachi has developed a sought after label due to the simplicity of design and aesthetic appeal of the garments.

This year Sabyasachi aimed to "retain a strong regional flavor" for the quintessential bride. He defined her as a "deep-rooted girl" who represents the ethos of global awareness with the traditional pathos of Indian culture. Sabyasachi has been credited with the revival of obsolete crafts and textiles in the country. "Half the textiles that I have used are now obsolete and I am trying to re-invent them. We are trying to re-unite Indian culture where there is more and more of western influence," admits the maestro.

Stunning lehengas were featured, as were flirty cholis, slinky dupattas, and a variety of kurtas, salwars, churidars and saris to have been inspired by the Patan Patola of Orissa. The collection boasted the opulence in textile decorative art blending velvets, silks, brocades with organzas, chiffons and other lighter fabrics.

Sabyasachi balances his quest for success and maintaining perfection with a non-commercial basis. He believes, "Ideas, talent and innovation percolate and cut above the crust of the extremely aggressive, commercial and competitive industry. My collection will be enjoyed by people of all walks of life especially those who believe slowing down is not equivalent to quitting."
